Qantas Status Run

When 'caught' I have explained to the crew the concept of an MR and that I am doing it to retain status. They've always been positive towards me.

I've only ever had a good laugh when this has occurred, particularly on CX where I tell the ladies that I "missed them"

I've done this run twice and I can attest that it is good value. Whenever the crew ask why I have just gone for such a short period of time (after having completed the walk of shame - I'm assuming this is what you were referring to) I normally just tell them that I was dropping off contracts for someone that needed to be hand delivered, or something similarly uninteresting. Slightly OT, but anyway.

I have done the TSV walk of shame couple of times. Once, when one of the FAs asked why I was back so soon, I said I was only in TSV to pick up some drugs. It didn't go down as badly as I thought it would.

I wouldn't have said it on an international flight though....

The so-called 'walk of shame' is worse when they don't recognise you at all... Although this probably explains the really poor service on those flights :(

Explaining an MR in the USA is far easier as those two simple words are known [and sometimes understood] by most in the US aviation industry.

Unfortunately I am memorable for all the wrong reasons....

ADL-BNE-TSV return JASA can be done for 48k points and less than $400. It can also be done same day but includes a walk of shame at TSV. It's worth answering the crews questions regarding your motives for the 240 status credits earn though

Or another option ADL-SYD-CBR return JASA for 48k points and (if I remember correctly) approx $165. Yields 200SC but is less cash outlay as only 150 SC are needed. Can be done in a day. Can also go via MEL, only 160 SC, still 48K points. Not sure of cash component.

Like many have already mentioned. Cost vs benefit analysis would be a good idea. Please let us know what you decide and how it goes!

I'm actually considering the New Zealand return from Sydney on LAN. But I've looked at pricing at it all seems pretty consistent, even for two weeks from now compared to four months. So I think I might hold off for a bit and see whether one of those double status offers that you mentioned come my way.

I renewed my QC this morning as well. $400 as opposed to $345 under my previous corporate scheme, but oh well. If I don't decide to do a run, then I'll just settle for the lounge I suppose and the same extra luggage benefits. But I do like travel, and as I'm still living at home, work full time as a graduate and have little overheads, If I go somewhere I'd prefer to go for a few days than just a one dayer.

Besides. I'd like to keep my points and use them towards my Europe trip with my partner at the end of the year. That's the only reason I considered the NYC run.

Sorry I don't use all the acronyms that you guys use as well. And I should really put this money towards a house or something, hey.

Yep after explaining it in a little detail they were understanding of why I'd spend a day flying around eating/drinking/watching TV to gain/retain status.

There are far far far worse ways to spend a day than the above

Do be careful with this, as double status credits are generally only given on QF flights so you won't get any more on LAN. However, if you are a lucky recipient of a double status credit offer, you may wish to book a JASA on QF (Business class any seat award) as these are earning seats and generally attract double status credits with a double SC offer (check the T&Cs, of course).

I find that the FA's are far more accepting of doing a "status run" then trying to explain to people at work why you want to do it..

Most it seems would rather sit at home and watch tv...

I agree, and if you're a good person who treats them with respect then you get really well looked after. There may be some bemusement but they do realise we're dedicated customers.

Definitely!

When I did a status run to move from Gold to Platinum, the CSM came over and was talking to me for about 10 minutes about my thoughts on Qantas etc etc was 1 of 3 people in J... After a bit I told her I was going to be Plat after this trip and she certainly looked after me for the rest of the flight....

I learned alot from her about Qantas customer service training and she took detailed notes of why I prefer QF over VA..

If they got passed on or not, I have no idea, but it was nice that she took the time to speak to me and care about my thoughts
