I'm planning to fly from Venice to Paris in Dec '13 and have so far been blown away by the one-way fares on Alitalia.... approx $3,500 for 3 adults & 2 kids!

Does anyone have any or used any less expensive alternatives to Alitalia?

Many thanks in advance.

Haven't done that route, but a LCC may be the answer , so long as luggage isn't an issue

We'll be a family of 5 so luggage may be issue. I'd imagine we'd be travelling with 3 x 20kg suitcases plus carry on. I guess even paying for luggage would be a heck of a lot less than Alitalia's quote.

Alitalia (whom I fly a lot with) are notorious for their one way fares being ridiculous. In fact you'll find if you pick a random date return it will a lot cheaper.
Your other options one way are Easyjet (just putting in random dates inc luggage and speedy boarding comes in at $97 each!), AirFrance, BA, Vueling, Austian, Air Berlin

Thanks mella2007... I did a check on Easyjet a few minutes ago before reading your post and even though their timetables only go as far as Oct 2013 their fares are crazy cheap even with luggage! Have you flown Easyjet?

You're welcome! Yes flown them plenty of times within Europe. Safe, reliable, planes are clean. Do buy speeding boarding and pre select your seats, as it really saves the hassle of everyone wanting to get on board first. Staff are friendly, all the flights I've taken (around 15 or so) have all been on time. Not sure when you're travelling, but do sign up to their emails as they offer decent sales well in advance also.

Many thanks for the great advice! I love this site!

Just ensure with your baggage when pre buying when you buy your ticket that you're confident you won't go over. If in doubt, pay for an 20kgs

I flew Paris (Orly) to Venice on easyJet last June for EUR77 one way including pre-purchased baggage (I think I bought a 25kg allowance) -- make sure you purchase the baggage allowance online beforehand because the rate is extortionate at the airport. Also make sure your carry-ons fit within their guidelines, because they checked bag sizes at boarding.

Was very happy with the flight even without buying speedy boarding and seat selection. Staff were friendly, boarding was efficient, flight was on time, and the view of the Alps during the flight was magnificent. :)

Not sure of the actual date in December you are flying. Just jumped onto Skyscanner and picked 15 Dec as a random date. eDreams came back with $913 direct for the lot of you VCE-CDG.

Many of the European legacies (like AF, KL, LH, IB) have not switched to one-way pricing in the same way we do in Australia. A one-way flight is not simply half the price of a return ticket. So as suggested above you can choose a random flight CDG-VCE and the price should drop. Another way is to book a multi-city ticket as this also seems to lower the price considerably (works on IB, LH). So maybe try VCE-CDG, CDG-LHR also.

I found that booking through Skyscanner (then Expedia, eDreams, etc.) I circumvented the airline rules. The only pain then was adding FF Details after the event.

I managed to book a couple of one way direct flights through LH last year with no hassles. AY I couldn't.

As already mentioned I use Skyscanner and then work from there using other websites etc... to find the best flight. I have used Easyjet and Ryan Air a number of times and have never had an issue but as they have also mentioned "WATCH YOUR LUGGAGE WEIGHT" (and was entertained at checkin with people arguing with the checkin agents) as they don't care that you might be a little over. (I learnt this the hard way) ... but didn't bother me in the end as I was there on business and the company paid for it. I would pay for speedy boarding because with kids you want to make sure you are sitting together and they are settled before the masses get on board.

Follow this link: Cheap flights from Venice to Paris at Skyscanner :)

PS: I also bought a return ticket Rome to Franfurt a couple of years ago and discarded the return leg as this was the cheapest ticket I could find.

I did that trip on Vueling about 5 years ago. They don't appear to have December fares up yet but they got me back. Not sure about their fine print.
