Hi. I'll be flying SYD-HKG-NRT next week. HKG is a 3 hr transit because I'm flying CX. If I buy duty free wine at SYD, will I have a problem getting it on the plane for the HKG-NRT leg? Can't remember if a boarding gate check for more than 100ml liquids is conducted. thanks in advance...

Certainly there's a gate check for flight TO Oz from HKG, so can't purchase D/F at HKG.

And there is transit security - no chance.

You will lose it.Even transferring CX-CX you have to go through security to get to new gate.Mrsdrron had a 102ml DO that was virtually empty confiscated there a couple of years ago when flying CX-BKK-HKG-HND.

I transited through HK, en route to CDG, having bought a lovely bottle of shiraz at Sydney dutyfree. My protection against poor French pinot noir, confiscated! I urged the guard to not throw it in the bin but drink it. He acted like he could not countenance that. A very fine performance it was too. While in France sans my shiraz de australie, I had to protect myself by drinking nothing other than Sancerre blanc and rouge for my entire trip (thank you HK guard!).

I had a very nice bottle of scotch confiscated at Cairns in transit to BNE from Hong Kong a few years back. Should have seen their faces when I said that if I couldn't have it nobody could. I opened it, took a swig and then dropped the inky inner part of a marker pen into it.

I have got LAGS though ok while in transit in HKG. They need to be in the tamper proof bag. This information from the HKIA site Passenger Guide - Transfer / Transit - Airport Security - Hong Kong International Airport

Q21. Can transfer passengers bring their liquid items purchased at the airport at their previous port of call or on board aircraft through the transfer security screening point at HKIA?

Yes, if such items are in containers no larger than 100ml and placed in a tranparent re-sealable plastic bag with maximum capacity of 1 litre .

Liquid purchases that are in excess of 100ml may be allowed through the security screening point at HKIA upon satisfactory checks if they meet the following requirements:

  • purchased from airports which have implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids (passengers are advised to check with their airlines on local requirements adopted at different countries) ; or
  • purchased on board Hong Kong registered aircraft (Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Hong Kong Airlines); or
  • purchased on board non-Hong Kong registered aircraft whose previous port of call is an airport which has implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids; and
  • liquid purchases are packed in a sealed plastic bag that is both tamper-evident and display satisfactory proof of purchase on the day(s) of the journey.

RWJ777, did SYD DF place your wine into a tamper proof bag? They should have asked you if you had any transit stops before your final destination.

dont buy duty free at sydney it's a rip off anyway - just go to dan murphy and put it in your checked baggage

as Austman correctly points out - LAG in tamper proof bags are accepted at HK security checkpoints. If there is an additional gate check (AU and USA) I don't think tamper proof bags gets through those - but for other flights its fine (and I have done it). Just need to tamper proof bag!
