hi everyone, my 22 year old daughter has accepted an offer to study in Scotland (Dundee University) for the first semester next year.

Our problem - she has to be in Scotland by 6th January 2013 - peak Christmas travel time, will be returning to Oz around end of July.

Had a quick look at flight costs last night, but we look to be paying in the vacinity of $2700.00 for a return ticket.

Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.

Are two one-way flights cheaper? Can't suggest much more other than being flexible and looking at options through Skyscanner.

Forgot about the Lufthansa Round The World ticket - go and talk to your agent about that one.

Are you somehow able to get a points ticket one way? If you look at getting return tickets from the EU they can be cheaper than tickets from AU

It can be tricky on Classic Rewards this time of year. Did a proposal for a friend, and while he needed London to BNE, the only way to do it was to fly him London-FRA-NRT-CNS-BNE (including JQ - blech) to be able to classic in January. Be open minded with routes if going down that path, and be prepared to wear a bigger hit than you anticipate in terms of points.

Dare I suggest the Canton route?

Plugging in For China Eastern for 3rd Jan and arbitary date at end of June, comes to apx $2200 (once converted from HKD)

Ain't perfect but it is at least $500 in your pocket.

A lot of people here in DRW do something similar. JQ to Singapore, overnight, and fly the next day on a different ticket. Not knowing where OP lives makes pricing difficult.

Qatar advertising $1600 RTN to LHR, then just book a cheapie from LHR-EDI & Drive the rest of the way.

Problem with the cheap Asia tickets is that the OP is unlikely to be able to get daughter to Singapore for anything close to a reasonable price, considering the time of year.

It would help if we had the departure city

What might be worth considering is a ticket on Malaysian, they are typically cheap. I would think about flying her in to London or even a western European port and getting the train the rest of the way to Edinburgh/Dundee

sorry, should have posted Syd is our nearest international airport. (live Hunter Valley) I may have enough points for some of the trip, but as I did a family transfer last January, I can't move points again until Jan 13, which is too late for the outbound journey.

I did suggest to her getting a 1 way, and then use my points for the return, but she is worried about getting picked up at LHR with no return ticket on a 6 month visa, no job and only a student.

I will look at RTW tonight.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond.

The points don't need to be in your daughters account for a flight to be booked in her name.

Our points are spread over 3 pax accounts (mine, hubbys and daughters) we did family transfer last January to get our QF PE Syd/Lax/Syd - from which we returned this week. Also waiting for all our AA flights points to hit my account.

Does anyone know which airline has a hub at say Paris or Amsterdam or nearby. I could then put her on a train. (sorry have not been to Europe for 8 years and not up to date with info)

Only OW hub in the vicinity of the UK not UK is DUS (Düsseldorf) - Air Berlin. That said, only Etihad and AB fly there, unless you look at Finnair.
