On a more serious note, are we Australians the worst bunch of travellers in the world?

How do you figure that? these 2 weren't Australians. Still trying to figure out the relevance of your question.

Yeah because I have sex in taxis all the time, at least once a week sometimes twice.

That rumour has been circulating for sometime here in Melbourne. I was trying to tell everyone it wasn't true....but now of course you have confirmed it.

:p

I wasn't the driver in that story. But I have other stories from when I did drive taxis ;)

Can I please nominate this post as the most ridiculous I have ever read on this forum ? Perhaps the OP should have also highlighted the folly of Jetstar or Virgin flying to Bali where carrying in a few Kg's of good stuff might land you in a bit of strife. Really, what a load of nonsense.

I'll second!

I'm not saying that we are the worlds worst, more a question, I've sadly seen Aussie tourists do things in countries which they certainly wouldn't do at home. But I wonder are we, or who is the "worst tourist nation of people"?

Once I was north of Chang mai, in a small village and was having a drink in the only bar. Two Aussies came in and demanded VB, of course the didn't have it so they cracked the s&@$'s and had a go at the bar tender.

It's not shagging in a taxi in Dubai, but its bad touristy karma.

This news story is not about Australians, the question remains as to the relevance of your question to this thread.

Let's campaign to get Jetstar to fly to Dubai and this will become the norm.

My feeling has already been said.

It's illegal in every country that I know of.

People hold your urges and wait to you can do it in privacy.

This is not sound advice in this instance as the couple were not married.

The latest travel information from the Foreign& Commonwealth Office:

Local Laws and Customs - Relationships Outside Marriage

Sex outside of marriage is illegal and if any offenders are brought to the attention of the UAE authorities they run the risk of prosecution, imprisonment and/or a fine and deportation.”

There have been reports that unmarried couples occupying the same room is prima facie evidence of a breach of the Law.

The more prudent advice would be not to travel there if not legally married.

Sirens, Lights, oh no its the posting police, pull over!!!!

Its a hyped up no news story about the alleged perils of Australians now having to go through Dubai......
Hence the average Aussie traveller should now be worried with thier normal travelling behaviour in going to a country that may punish them for it.

A crock and a joke of an joined assumption surely?

Given that the article is a joke, isnt it fair to talk about the genralisations of aussie travellers too? thus combining the worst of what we have seen in our travel experieces with the new "Aussies will be arrested al over the place" mentality of the article and some other posts on AFF?

Clearly the polar opposite to Las Vegas

?

Whatever! No posting police involved. Trying using something like  if your not serious as per your explanation. It helps people understand your point the first time. Personally, I try not to over analyse these types of news ltd stories. Hence when apparently serious but irrelevant questions are posted I ask about the relevance.

But rarely enforced as long as you dont make things obvious. As posted before I know of expat instances where the locals know but look the other way.

Goodness, I'd expect them to be arrested, or at least reported, if they did this in Australia. So damn offensive and disrespectful to the taxi driver! Serves them right.

Why taxi drivers won't bother doing this in Australia:
  • They're getting paid by them - they aren't throwing that away for the sake of a report or arrest
  • They're getting a show
  • They think it'll be a wasted exercise - the couple gets a slap on the wrist and be on their way, and you lost time when you could've been picking up another job
  • Most cops will think you're an idiot for reporting something so trivial and wasting their time

As I said, that's Australia.... Not saying it validates the act, but we have a different reality here (and I'm not necessarily endorsing that reality either!).

Yes there are some Australians that should not travel but the majority are responsible tourists.

I got to witness British coughs/thugs in Thailand. Not a good sight but thank God the financial crisis has curbed their travel.

The Russians are not too far behind. For some reason these people are so arrogant and refuse to acknowledge there are others around. They walk 2-3 across on narrow footpaths and expect you to get out of their way. They walk around as if they own the place. It was good that they restricted themselves to certain parts of Pattaya but now they are starting to go everywhere. Not a good sign at all.

And there are others who are not fit to travel and should simply stay in their own countries.

You dont think much of taxi drivers then, do you. As a former cop, I wouldn't think reporting a sexual act in the back of a car a trivial matter.

hear hear......the russians have a chip on their shoulder.....they lost the cold war and seem to be running second in the economic wars....

corrupt countries dont do well.

You dont think much of taxi drivers then, do you.

Most of them probably have a sense of conscience, but in the end they just don't, or can't, care. Unless they're being mugged or assaulted, it's next job, next job, next job.

You have to feel sorry for the ones that actually do get mugged or assaulted. They usually don't get any justice for their pain anyway, and whoever did the crime against them usually gets off lightly, and that is if they get caught in the first place.

As a former cop, I wouldn't think reporting a sexual act in the back of a car a trivial matter.

So you must've been one of the better cops around.

Of course, I'm sure that compared to the days that you were a cop, not as many people were being shot, and the crime rate was not as rampant as it is now.

Also, there are big differences between reporting the act, arrest due to the act and punishment for the act. Huge differences.

Back on topic, no one has still entertained the possibility that it's an allegation but the couple were not actually caught in the act.

Probably good to know that being a taxi driver in the UAE is a tad safer than most Western countries. At least the cops will believe you.
