The federal government announced on Friday it will amend the airport's lease, allowing it to build a new terminal and paving the way for it to service international passenger flights.
Corio MP Richard Marles announced the government's decision at the airport, 55km southwest of the Melbourne CBD, on Friday.
Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings described it as a win for the region and Victoria.
"This decision cements Avalon's future as Victoria's second major domestic and new international airport," Mr Giddings said in a statement.
The airport's lease conditions have been amended to allow the building of a new terminal up to 10,000 square metres and up to a cost of $15 million without triggering the need to do a major development plan.

That's just over a third the size of OOL's terminal... might be a bit lacking.

Would be good for Tiger, but I wonder if Jetstar should perhaps take a look too...

Not sure how successful this will be. There isn't a lot of traffic at AVV as it is already... and now they're thinking this will really rope people in?

I wonder if there will be air traffic issues if AVV starts pulling in the pax? (Not just the Geelong / Avalon area, but also the general Melbourne area and surrounds).

Also, if there are international flights, will they be to/from "Avalon" or will it be "Melbourne" or "Melbourne-Avalon" (rather than "Melbourne-Tullamarine")?

I will avoid Avalon with a passion. Unless you live at Werribee or Geelong, a shocking location.

It should be worth noting that most of the best airports in the world are not located a nice distance away from the cities which they service. (Singapore is the only key exception which springs to mind, if that can be regarded as an exception).

So hopefully if they are fair dinkum about setting up a terminal there, the fabled rail link will also come to fruition. (Of course, the Tullamarine crew will have a riot about their missing out on a rail link).

To put a different spin on this, consider London-Stansted, serving for the most part, EasyJet and Ryanair (and putting aside the fact that most people here wouldn't be caught dead on these carriers). Really, the only way to get to Stansted is via bus, which from the edge of the centre of London (outer part of zone 2 of the TfL map), takes at least an hour, putting aside traffic. But, people damn well put up with it! (Thankfully there are hotel facilities near the airport)

EDIT: Whoops, just realised that there is the Stansted Express. It costs a bomb, though....

I'm pretty sure people would put up with the annoyance of AVV for $49 international airfares (this price is a guess, but it wouldn't surprise me)... It's amazing what ppl will do to save a dollar or 2. Esp if it means they can get flights to bali and coughet.

Introducing the new Ibis Budget Hotel Avalon :)

Airlines could be in a far better position to negotiate landing costs & carrier benefits at an airport such as AVV as opposed to MEL. The example of Stanstead springs to mind.

V Line express Southern Cross to AVV, 1 stop Werribee, the new link rail terminating at Werribee, Freeway at the gate, land, land and even more land, all that's needed is a cross runway. Excellent news.

What about HKG? Admittedly it is only a 23-minute train trip into the city, but that's still almost half an hour! No reason a fast train service, express if you will, couldn't get to Southern Cross and then transfer to other lines.

By car it's almost an hour from where I used to live and that's fairly close to the city!



NOOOOOO we don't want JQ to do all international flights out of AVV.

No flouge

You can easily get to Stansted by train. I've done it before. Never would think of catching a bus..
