I flew CX on their 9am HKG-PEK flight on a weekend recently and was struck by how many people I noticed on the plane and in the immigration queue with Australian accents and passports. They also seemed to be predominantly from MEL, having connected on the midnight MEL-HKG CX flight.
Yet more evidence that QF will become a Sydney airline rather than an Australian airline if they cannot even win market share to HKG from MEL. As many pointed out, from MEL you can only leave at 1415 and arrive at 2100-2200 which means you have to overnight in HKG before connecting elsewhere in China or on CX/BA/AY etc elsewhere. Even if you could it would mean an arrival time in the 0100-0400 window that few people would be interested in.
I assume the problem is even worse out of BNE/PER.
