Could you fly the plane in an emergency?????????

A handbook/getting started guide placed prominently in the coughpit also wouldn't go astray, one of those that cuts through all the cough and lets you get up and flying your A380/B747 etc in a few easy steps... :)

A380 for Dummies....

Bah, anyone could fly the plane, even a rookie novice.

LANDING the plane is a different story.

Think of it like driving. Put some one who has never been at the wheel of an automobile in the middle of a salt lake and they could drive it around no problem. Put them in the middle of a city and it becomes a different story.

So flying around in a large expanse of air, sort of easy (provided you keep the bank angle and pitch within reasonable limits). But aiming for a tiny strip of concrete at 300 kays is a different story. Hell, just finding the airport would be a challenge.

Rookie novice implies that said person is sufficienly aware of the AI, and keeps a power setting that will stop the aircraft losing altitude.

Of course, that only really works until the fuel runs out.

Maybe with a runway forty kilometers long, you'd be okay. Nullabor plain? Would a (for example) a 747 even fit on a 2 lane road? I wonder what the distance between the trucks are?

Waht happened with Air France? Was that the pilot's son crash?

Those guys were trained pilots? By the sound of the CVR transcript those guys WERE the rookie novices.

Maybe rookie novices + bad weather = crash.

Remind me to strike Air France off my "I'll fly with this airline" list...

In which case, I'd like to see how many rookie novices there'd be on a random flight... no, Microsoft Flight Sim "graduates" do not count.

As you said, the difficulty if even you can handle the aircraft in the air is landing it. So you could have a perfect asphalt desert with nothing around for kilometres and you'll still stuff up the landing and kill everyone.

From what I gather, very simply, the crew screwed up. So if the crew can be incapable then what chances does someone who is non-crew have?

I did some single engine (and glider) training many years ago so would probably fall into the category of someone who thinks they would be able to do it - having read the Ask the Pilot thread I know I wouldn't be able to do it.

They key thing I think that jb747 has said is that the situation is unlikely to occur - as soon as one pilot is incapacitated they head to their "closest" alternate landing site.

Let's just hope they don't both have the chicken or both have the beef.

Great responses everyone!!!:)

Just the sort of banter AFFers love to exchange

Keep going, I am waiting for someone to take control and head into outerspace for more room:evil:

After 30 years of MSFS I could easily land a plane in the Darling Harbour simulator but I doubt I could do anything useful in a real plane, except maybe allow everyone to use their mobile phones, encourage heavy smoking and order all alcohol stores to be quickly distributed.

That said from my minimal experience in real single engine planes plus knowledge of approach speeds, stall limits etc from the PC simulator I think I could land one of them (eg Cessna) and survive. That is probably a more realistic scenario to think of, especially if you are flown to remote sites quite often.

Now if you were chartering a single engine to a remote site weekly would you want to have some lessons??

In my younger days I spent hundred of hours playing computer flight simulation games and I can confidently say that if I ever had to land a Spitfire or FW190 I would at least have some idea how to do it.

:shock: I'm not even comfortable volunteering as a medical professional yet! I'll trust the 17yo with the Flight Sim experience, thanks (hopefully they haven't had as many G+Ts as I'd had).

Have you ever pondered your answer (sitting as a passenger), if in an emergency the PA says

"Can anyone advise if they have flight experience or can fly a plane?

What would you do??????????????????:shock::confused:

No lol. I recall the obvious one is that most would disengage the autopilot accidentally, while looking for the radio button, dooming you faster.

However I feel fairly confident if I was in a window seat near a wing I could spot fuel leaking :p

Ah, the old aircraft lands itself story. Well, yes, they can...but basically the actual landing is about #100 on a list of steps that you have to undertake so that it can land itself. You just need to take care of the other 99.

As I said on a thread a while back. I took a friend who is a very avid and capable flight simer, and who has done the 737 flight experience 'sims', for a session in the real 747 sim. I think saying that he found it a lot more difficult that he expected would be an understatement. So, whilst I'm sure the 737 experience is great fun, I don't know that I'd attribute much reality to your engine out, in snow, landings at Kai Tak.

There are a number of buttons on the left hand control yoke. Take your choice. And the frequency on the 'dash' is not a communications frequency....

I suspect you might be better off trying to drink as much as possible in the time remaining. If I fall over drunk, it never seems to hurt. Perhaps you could go for the same in the ensuing accident.

I'm your sort of passenger for an emergency!! Hic!

Of course I could ! so many times in the sim(microsoft) havent has a mishap for a long time now !! flown them all 747's/ Cessna /ect no worries !! oh! ahh! gulp ! I'm awake-------

I suppose I would put my hand up to try and take one through its paces if the situation called for it... :)

If the crew without exception always choose the wrong button, ask one to point to what they think and then leave that one well alone... :)

I personally, if I was a crew member, would want to know the basics of what to do in an emergency on the type of plane I was crewing, but perhaps JB could put up an instructional video on You Tube to help us all out, we can download onto devices and keep with us just in case...

A "quick start" guide.

I like it!

I think I will keep my parachute handy though..lol.

After staring this post I realised that if the flight is after about 11am alchohol would be a factor in my decision to put the hand up:D

Therefore only an emergency before drinks are served please ..............

Still might get he bar open sooner????????
