DJ or VA when will this be resolved?

Not a hard question I would have thought but when will DJ be replaced by VA as the operator reference?

As I understand it, not before they move onto one system.

Sent from my HTC Legend using AustFreqFly

Given the spin off of the international division I don't believe it will be, two AOCs and therefore two codes will be needed as they are separate airlines.

If that's the case, could they not then use DJ codes on domestic flights for 'regulatory purposes', but sell all tickets as VA codeshares, and never show the DJ codes publicly?

I'm not sure that this could not be overcome. I don't recall Ansett and Ansett International using two different designators. And the various regional airlines flying QF flights suggests it can still happen.

If you wanted to sell it later, a separate prefix makes sense, I doubt they will change but who knows.

Yes - is this an airline with international operations or a loose connection of disjointed operators. Virgin (globally) have never inspired or operated as a global carrier - the DJ/VA issue reinforces this.

I'm just going off a comment in the investor presentation, where it says moving to Sabre will allow for designator consolidation. Hence, won't happen before then!

And yet having VA on my boarding pass will make zero difference to my inflight experience, my lounge experience, my booking experience etc. Changing the flight code will not instantly make me see Virgin as a global brand. YMMV.

In that case it must be going to happen.

Given we have people here who complain about codeshares and how confusing that is for them (not being able to check in at the QF desk for a QF codeshare on BA for example) there is certainly confusion about carriers out there and this would simplify things.

And you have at he same time given a good reason why they are in no hurry to join an alliance.

FWIW, most DJ searches I do with ExpertFlyer also return separate entries for the VA codeshares of many of the flights.

Doesn't Jetconnect operate as QF? If so surely all Virgin Aust flights would be able to be VA (tho I like DJ for heritage reasons:))

Won't there be (or at least the potential to be) different shareholders of the two Virgin entities? That would be then the difference as QF owns 100% of Jetconnect. Or maybe I've misinterpreted the split up...Apologies if I have.

There is no link between the selling airline and the operating airline when it comes to the codes, there is flexibility. An example of this is DJ selling flights that are currently operated by Skywest ad Alliance Airlines.

The reservation system, both the front end and the back end is the limiting factor, which has been said above is scheduled to be fixed by the end of the year.
