There was talk of a new airport on the flat plain on the south side of Goulburn (look to left when you drive south along the freeway at the second Goulburn exit).
Since no one in Australia will ever have the political courage to build a second airport, why not do what has been done in cities such as HKG and build a third runway in the existing Sydney Airport - could be possible as Caltex plans to close Kurnell soon, or even by just extending the runways out further into Botany Bay.
Looking at my original post, I was too harsh in my wording and I apologise for offending anyone - it was by no means a personal attack.
To clarify I do think the curfew as it stands (be it because of location reasons of the airport or otherwise) is contributing to hindering growth. I still think limited departures in the 11pm-1am bracket should be allowed as a short-term measure, before a new airport is built. An approach like with HND in Tokyo that allows limited late night departures might be feasible. And this could be further reduced to certain types of aircraft to minimise noise disturbance, and only certain flight paths could be utilised to minimise noise disturbance also.
I just get a bit angry at some (not those on this forum) who oppose airports on noise grounds just for the sake of opposing airports without considering economic and social losses that may result.
Mascot was around long before the current residents were.!!
It is irrelevant what I believe but by the same token things have indeed changed since. You still believe that don't you ... and you believe nothing has changed since then ... I know you'll won't alter your view. However, I do not believe that to be the case.
I have to agree with this, I would also take a guess that most of the current residents have moved in since the first jet services started flying to SYD...
It's not like they woke up one day and looked out the window puzzled because an airport had been built there overnight...
BARRY O'Farrell's plan to use Canberra as Sydney's second airport has crashed and burned after the state government agreed to a major housing development under the Canberra Airport flight path.
Planning Minister Brad Hazzard will announce the rezoning of South Tralee today for the building of up to 2000 homes, a development that has been the subject of conflict for more than a decade.
Mr Hazzard said the rezoning was necessary, as more housing is urgently needed in Queanbeyan.
Mr Hazzard said it was a "win win" for Canberra airport, allowing it to grow up to five times its current size and with no imposed curfews.
I know it's not quite right to bring up an old thread, but this probably sits best here:

So..........what is actually the problem with Wollongong or Newcastle as the destination? Certainly quicker from Wollongong to many parts of Sth and West Syd than from Mascot. Similarly, it would be quicker from Newcastle to many north SYD destinations than from Mascot.
It would be my guess - but at the moment the problem would be the current lack of services from Wollongong or Newcastle to many places. But I accept your point that if these airports were expanded and had more services then they may be viable alternatives as you suggest.
