They've got to find somewhere for all those A320s they ordered now Qantasia is bust....

Very interesting. Would this p*ss CX off so much that they will leave OW and joing *A instead? Afterall CA owns like 20%+ of CX.

But have to say that I don't think CX can stop this given there is already a Chinese partner involved, and pretty much Beijing is calling the shots of HK's affairs these days.

Maybe CX is more annoyed that it will possibly affect there dragon air business.

Such a different headline to "QF to launch premium Asian carrier"

Completely. You would assume this has been in planning behind the scenes as RedQ fiasco was panning out.

With CX, well they could of got into bed with JQ themselves, no use complaining now.

CX and QF already have a rocky relationship at the best of times I believe.

Another AJ scam destined to fail!

Sadly I think this will be quite successful. People want cheap flights - there are lots of people in Asia.

+1 for this.

Most of these flights will be sold as part of travel tour packages, which are very popular in HK.

Yep,this is just a little bit of an item in plane talking-
Both Joyce and Buchanan spoke about the rise of the middle class consumer in China, saying their numbers had now reached 300 million people with the desire and money to fly on a low cost product, and Buchanan said that this market could grow to as many as 700 million qualified consumers by the end of this decade.
Qantas says HK plan means no premium carrier or job losses | Plane Talking

A few niggling points on the whole idea,

1. Shenzhen Airport - the de-facto low cost hub to HKG, flights from SZX to mainland chinese cities are well below those from HKG and local people take full advantage of this as well as incoming chinese tourism (transfers from Shenzhen to Hong Kong are big business with 2 mtr stations, many coach services, car transfers about to be opened up and several border crossing points). As an example at easter I'm travelling SZX-HAK which saved 50% over HKG-HAK.

2. HKG Runway Capacity - A 3rd runway has recently been approved for construction and there are efforts clear up the congested airspace by consolidating other airports in the region. Prime runway slots have already been jumped on by the legacy carriers.

3. CX - As has been mentioned the relationship is poor between QF and CX - they have strong loyalty in their home market and extensive penetration with Asia Miles. They also have a head start on the whole '2 brand' approach with Dragonair already operating on a lower cost base to leisure destinations whilst running an award winning service. CX also already has a mainland Chinese sponsor in Air China backing them who is unlikely to rest on their laurels whilst the CZ/JQ tie up affects their market share.

4. Hainan Group - the so called 'new kid on the block' Hong Kong Airlines has been fighting for several years now bitterly for market share and credibility, it's fares heavily undercut the major carriers to leisure and business destinations already but it is viewed with suspicion locally and is regular fodder for the tabloids with tales of customer service 'nightmares'. Backed by the Grand China group it also has deep pockets to sustain a low fares assault.

5. Other LCCs - 10 other LCCs operate from HKG to Asian destinations already.

I'll be curious to see who is the target market for this new JQ franchise as it is a very crowded market place here already. I'm sure the domestic helpers travelling between Indonesia, Phillipines, Thailand etc will be glad to see further competition on their routes!

Otherwise there is still along way to go for this announcement to be fleshed out into a story for success.

I read the article and the thing that made me giggle were -

The announcement came as it was revealed Adelaide will be the destination for Australia's first commercial biofuel flight when Qantas powers one of its Airbus jets with cooking oil next month. Passenger tickets are on sale for the Friday the 13th flight from Sydney, which will use a 50 per cent mix of converted cooking oil in one of the two engines of its twin-aisle Airbus A330s.

Qantas had no problems with the flight being on Friday 13th.

Good on QF for starting this domestically. Funny it should be on Friday the 13th (not that I'm superstitious - in fact its a good number for the Chinese but it might put a few people off if they knew what was going on).

Amazing, and perhaps a sign of how out of touch the folks at Qantas are. This quote below is directly from their announcement this morning to the Australian Stock Exchange:

Chief Executive Officer of the Jetstar Group, Mr Bruce Buchanan, said the new airline would
trigger new travel demand as the first low cost carrier based in Hong Kong and only the
second currently based in Greater China.

10 low cost carriers may operate to Hong Kong, but I don't believe any are based there. So the statement from Qantas seems correct. I believe the one for greater China is Spring Airlines.
