P1 Gazumping the front row of whY

Hi all

In the "How successful has P1 been?" thread it was posited that P1s were now grabbing the juicy row 4 (73x) or row 23 (76x) on domestic whY flights. I thought we could share experiences.

As we all know rows 4/5 and 23/24 are blocked for Cl and (now) P1 until T-80. At which point up until OLCI opens they can be accessed by WP if not already allocated to P1/CL. My experience for man many of my flights was that I could pretty much guarantee row 23 and less frequently row 4. On the past few flights this has been a bit hit or miss.

So below is some reflections of changes - hoping to see some others share in teh same way. Format is:

Date Flight From-To Original Seat -> Actual seat When changed:

15 Feb QF409 SYD-MEL 25 -> 23 T-80*
16 Feb QF458 MEL-SYD 25 -> 24 T-80

*T-80 means any time from T-80 to OLCI opening
 
Similar for Domestic Business with row 1 generally blocked from the hoi-polloi WP.

18 Feb QF616 MEL-BNE 2 -> 1 T-80*
18 Feb QF637 BNE-MEL 2 -> 1 T-80
 
I've noticed this - I haven't made it into row 23 on a 763 for some time (I've normally ended up still in 25, as I only like window seats, which cuts down my options!), but it was nearly always achievable last year.

Must agree - seem to get the Y row 4/23 most of the time (except CBR flights). Just thought I was lucky :p My partner who is a poor destitute WP doesn't appear to be as lucky, usually being auto allocated row 5 /25 although recently was given 5B on a 73x
 
From the other side of fence... Being able to select 4A or 1A pretty much every time straight after making the booking is great. Although one exception was a booking only made 2 days before the flight and two lowly WPs had already grabbed 4A and 4F so I had to settle for 4D.

I rarely fly on 767s or A330s so haven't had any experience as a P1 on them yet.
 
All my recent experience has been on 73(x). It is very hit and miss with just the odd seat, in 6 flights this year, opening in Row 4 at T-80 or later. This is very different from 12 months ago when I could just about guarantee Row 4 out of and into CNS. Now I have given up worrying and choose an exit row seat when I book. I don't need to burst through the starting gates after landing and there is better access to the rear loos, so I'm not too fussed to be towards the rear (as long as access to the exit rows at booking for WPs continues of course !).
 
Booked and upgraded a PER-SYD (747) sector about 3 weeks from now.

As a QF Gold, l have 2 rows to choose from on the lower deck and 2 on the upper deck. Will stay where l am until T-80 opens up.
Seat selection as a QF Gold is dismal at times...

IIRC there was discussion that P1s can have a double platinum shadow - ie assuming the flight is not full a P1 sitting in 4A means that 4B and BC are unavailable to be selected. I place some credence in this as on a recent CBR-MEL flight I could not get into row 4 (including check in) yet there was only one pax sitting on each side of the aisle.

This may explain a decrease in access to the first couple of rows in Y.
 
Here is my numbers for 2012. I've included scheduled departure time, as that plays a role in this matter. I always select row 6 aisle when making a booking and then move at or after T-80. These are the final seats, so if it is showing row 6 I couldn't get anything better. Also I generally do not take a middle seat over row 6 aisle and will sometimes take a row 4 window in a 737-800. I'm in 4A later this week, I'll let you guess which flight number. Hint: it's not 765.

Interesting and pretty successful medhead. For dom flights I have switched to window seats (despite the increased risks of serious illnesses) as I now only fly 763s pretty much and I find them more spacious.

I have a trick, but I'm finding it doesn't work as much this year especially from safari on an i device or MBP. By way of comparison here are my last 3 or 4 months of flights for 2011. Filtering out the few JASA and apology upgrades - QF730 was my problem child at getting row 4. Not surprising as I've seen 2 identifible CLs regularly on that flight. The only other non-row 4 seat was when I asked to move from QF785 to QF743 - 5D I can hand to get home 2 hours early. (NB there were also a large number of DJ flights during this time all in row 3)

As a P1, I have been able to select a seat in row 4 on the last 10 or so legs between MEL and BNE (4C or D). Unless the flight is full, B and E have always been empty, but occasionally A or F has been occupied.
 
These are weekend flights, which may have affected availability (in a good way)! 738s, 'C' seats selected in each case, 4B empty each flight.

I promise this P1 will not ever hog the front row of economy class.

I have a shadow on nearly all my J sectors. I hope it continues.

Not sure how you manage that as every flight I have been on MEL-SYD has been full in J.
 
Not too sure then. It always seems to be the case though.

Possibly because I'm not usually flying at "peak" periods? To be fair I'm not a MEL - SYD flyer generally but I very rarely see a full J cabin.

I have only been able to move into the front row of economy at T-80 hours 5 times in my last 10 flights. Prior to November 2011 I would be almost guaranteed row 23 or row 4 on 737.

Out of those flights I could only choose 23B on 767 and both times it morphed into a 737. Twice on a 737 I have had to settle for 4A as only choice in front row but last week I had 4ABC to myself and quickly moved to 4C. Only time have I been able to move to 4C at T-80 hours.
