AVV to get a monorail

There has been a discussion about a MagLev to Tulla for a few years. What is that I hear, what is MagLev. Well that is Magnetic Leveration. Or a train that can go at 400Kilometers per hour,yes thats right 400KPH. They have one in Shanghai, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life, better than the Shinkansen Tokyo to Osaka. It was rejected out of hand by the state government, probably because tourist don't vote??

The last couple of times I have been on the Maglev it peaking at 345 and 300 respectively. The high speed trains in China (G Trains) are faster at peak speeds I noticed of 375 at one point between Shanghai and Beijing.

In saying that however, any form of high speed i.e. >200kph from Melbourne to MEL would be great. While my bum points toward the ground though, I think we will be lucky to see a low speed commuter train, and that's really being lucky. I am not against a train link at any stretch of the imagination.

As for the AVV naysayers, when you live west of Melbourne, and can frequently get sub $100 fights to Sydney at short notice, AVV is a God send as is the cheaper parking and easy freeways. I truly hope L Fox is able to get this airport to the level he wants. Sure it does not have lounges and the trimmings of MEL, but build a large enough customer base, and who knows what the future holds.

We hit 375 between Shanghai and Beijing in December - well post accident. I seemed to mainly travel at 300-320 though.
 
Have pictures of the Maglev when I was on in 2007 travelling at peak speed of 431kph. Mighty impressive. But IIRC they have capped the speed apparently due to noise issues, particularly at certain times of the day.

Yeah, would be interesting to find out why they slowed them down
 
CRH trains originally travelled at 333kmh but post the Wenzhou collision last year ALL high speed trains had 10% max speed clipped off top - rarely now do CRH trains exceed 300kmh.

At that time Chinese authorities claim 40 odd people died and hundreds injured - my Chinese people tell me in fact 100's died - but who would ever know.

I think - I repeat I think Maglev also had speed clipped as a result of this - I rarely travel Maglev cause I always got too much luggage going or coming - but YES that 431km ride was just something to experience. What about that SHUDDER as another Maglev doing 431kmh went past you in other direction - truly amazing.

I will send off a couple of emails to my Shanghai mates and see if they know real reason.

Edit - Info back from Shanghai is that Maglev speed reduced from 431kmh to 330kmh post Wenzhou accident as safety precaution. I have not ridden Maglev since then so only passing on second hand info.
Max I have seen on CRH post accident is indeed 305 or so - but then I have never done BJ-SH / SH-BJ trip - I prefer to be sitting in decent hotel bar in either city drinking cold Tsingtao as opposed to the luke warm Tsingtao on CRH trains.

Monorail MonoRAIL MONORAIL! That song was sung by the late great Phil Hartman.

A high speed train from MEL to the CBD would not be viable. The mostly likely option would be a line that connects to an existing line. That would probably be a journey of 40-60 mins. Whatever the train option for MEL, it should have been done 20 years ago.

P.s. I heard the high speed trains in China have also been slowed, so as to reduce electricity costs.
 
The state government is seriously looking at th transport option to MEL, whether anything comes of it. Will be very interesting. Too many vested interests I think. Like Taxis, Skybus, and airport parking which make up a large part of the airport corp's profit. They will all be having a quiet chat to the government. It would also require federal government money as well, and as it runs through federal labor seats and would upset people there. Added to this all federal government have had and still have a SYD airport first policy (s*#t of an airport).
But you never know??
 
1. Monorails are awesome
2. I have never flown out of AVV (I detest LCCs), but I think it is good to build up a second airport so the infrastructure capacity is there and there is competition on landing fees, which feeds into ticket price competition.
