Typical, just as I head overseas tonight :p

Yes I saw that earlier. :(

Can you tell I am going overseas in just over a week? I was getting 1 AUD = 32 baht in June and now I will be lucky to get 1 AUD = 30 baht. I still can't work out how the AUD lost 1.5 baht since last night.

Does anyone really know what is going on?

I think currency fluctuations are about as easy to understand as... say... airline revenue management......but having travelled to the USA when it was .49... I am really reluctant to complain about the current drop!!!!

Thanks trooper for reminding me....I was at a conference and trade show in Chicago and the Hyatt was 280 plus tax. I could hear the vacuum going flat out in my pocket.

Every currency is getting slammed as investors flock to the US dollar. The AUD is currently at $0.9754 - a 5 cent drop in 24hrs is pretty nasty. China slow down and commodities getting bashed also puts downward pressure on the Aussie.

No.

My current punt is that the dollar will fall to early 90's, then languish there for about a month or two before staging another rally back past par and up to $1.10.

Time will tell....

No one seems to talk about the yen. Probably the only currency not getting hammered. The Australian $ isn't that strong if you're travelling to Japan.

Don't blame the four of us on our trip down the west coast of America.....I don't think we caused the dollar to roll over.
What is the worlds greatest treasurer saying ?
We are back using US dollars so everything is sweet as the only bills went on 28 degrees card before the tumble.

No, don't say that.

I am going away in just under a week and I have already lost ~7,000 baht of what I had budgetted on spending.

I cannot believe that the AUD is so volatile to lose so much against most currencies in a matter of days....

My punt is it will go lower than that before heading up again.

Its ok John, your golf game is worth that much. Don't worry about it because currencies are unpredictable.
Feel lucky for the trips you have done!
We can leave the worlds greatest treasurer to worry about his budget and all the instability. I still expect his budget will miss by way more than even he could imagine because he used 3% plus growth for Australia this year.
We are loving the Intercontinenal in Monterey in California as the ocean is right at the base of the hotel and the night view is excellent.

Well I purchased USD$1000 on Tuesday and it was about $50 cheaper than today. :-| I am off to the US in March next year and I hope it recovers before then.

Like John, I am also off to Thailand soon (11 Oct) and am hoping that the AUD$ doesn't depreciate much more. Fortunately I have some THB left over from last time and have prepaid my accommodation so should be fairly well covered.

Well we are off to Thailand too at the begining of November.Fortunately this time pre paid our accommadation.
