The role of the moderators on here is not an easy one.

Whilst I enjoy some of the heated debate, I do agree that it may not be ideal in the long run to condone it.

As for the mods, I do feel they do a good job.

I don't think anyone is arguing here that their job is easy or that they do anything other than a good job. I think what we are getting to is that there could be a good reason for their job spec to change a bit in light of the recent change in the quality and volume of content being posted perhaps...

Some people do, if you don't, just don't read it - a simple solution! No need to get angry and negative about it...

Problem is Noob is thaat, as explained by numerous people in this thread - people actually want to hear information but it is being drowned out by cough within threads they want information from. People have said blocking is the solution - I think that is sad, but I know that is already happening which I think should be taken seriously as the start of something to address.

I mod in a health/fitness/body building forum about the same size as AFF. We have a much younger and let's say 'broader' lol user base so we have to mod the direction a little more to keep the cough out and keep it professional - after all I don't want a newbie acting on loose non fact based opinion and cheer squads.... Bit different I know but just another angle.

Maybe this is something admin looks at.... I don't know.

Maybe we just get pauly7 to meet serial offenders in person and see them off with his massive guns! :p;) (for those who haven't met him in person he kinda resembles a mens health cover hahaha).

I don't know how many of you visit Flyertalk, but to me the AFF moderating seems very liberal in comparison. On Flyertalk I've seen pages and pages of posts deleted - without trace or even mods noting that posts have been deleted - and not because it is spam, trolling or abusive, merely because it is OT (ie not fitting with the specific forum). Same goes for thread locking. Very strict rules are enforced on FT.

Generally the AFF mods do an excellent job, even if debate wanders all over the place, they tend let things get through unless people start becoming abusive (or it is obvious spam).

Hey Jake, I don't think we should use this to excuse harassment, but I think reform needs to be made in where and what is posted.

Who likes the idea of a 'playground' style thread in the VA and QF forums for all these types of posts? The toaster thread and such can be all be merged.

However, I honestly think there is more to this than meets the eye - some people may just not be happy that the business who doesn't recognise them as status flyers is gaining ground. And the way people are acting I wouldn't be surprised if this was simply the case.

Noob what makes you think that is the case?

Sorry Noob.I have status with no Aussie airline.
Out of my home port MCY I can choose DJ,JQ or maybe again TT.The only one I have a hope of getting status on is DJ.
But I am like JohnK.I no longer look at the Virgin threads. No point wading through all the chaff.Sorry.

I agree with you. I was wondering if it was only me or if the DJ sub forum had become advertorial. Some posts were cringeworthy.
I support the mods in their efforts to keep the forum open and robust, it's not a job I would like to do.

drron & Princess Fiona - do you have some examples of the "chaff" and cringeworthy posts/threads? I'm just interested to know what you guys consider to be fluff and lacking substance.

Dont have to go past the fly buys promo thread. But I would like to know then what you consider substantive input in the last 3-4 days?

Aha sure, put them in a cage with me when I have my MMA training ;)
I'll teach em facts from fiction ;)

Totally disagree, especially from my POV. I actually think most people here are open and engaged in seeing what is transpiring with VA.

It's the continuous nothing posts which are bringing that sub forum down...

Typical thread:
VA makes an improvement : fact.
But then we are screamed down by a chorus of 'it's the best improvement ever in this history of forever and no other airline could do this and it's amazing and by the way Qantas and Jetstar are just cough.' X 10.
Interspersed are a few good analysis posts and critical views but they are harder to pick out - then they often get shouted down...

That's basically the gist!

The even bigger problem is that when someone replies to cough posts it makes it even harder to get information out of a thread. You soon end up with 10 cough posts instead of just one cough post. IMO anyone who thinks the answer to cough posts is to engage with the person making the post is deluded. To reply is just as bad at fouling up a thread as the cough post in the first place.

It is a simple matter to ignore the cough posts. To be very clear ignore does not mean block. Sure, to ignore someone takes self control but it is this is a simple way to answer these cough posts that everyone is complaining about.

You actually read that thread? Sure I made a couple of posts there but I can't say I seriously read more than the first few posts until I found out there was no news there. Especially as the promo was already detailed elsewhere.

I think you have missed the point again.

I am interested in Virgin announcements.

I am interested in debate.

I am totally disinterested in what is going on in the VA forum.

If I was VA I would be worried that perhaps my message was not getting across.

I have missed a number of good posts in the VA forum as I choose to ignore what is posted in the forum as I am not interested in wading through all the rubbish to find something useful.

Actually I find a lot of the posts, behaviour, in the VA forum childish and not even worthy of the Playground....

Only because I saw that a fellow called medhead had posted.;)

I think you will find people are unhappy with the playground posts not being in the playground, as it clutters up the real news and tips on offer. Going off topic in threads with what could be considered playground material is also not good and annoys those who have subscribed to a thread to keep an eye out for useful updates!

Just adding my support for the mods who do a very fair job on a reasonably busy board.

They walk a fair line between censure and preventing personal attacks. Typically when a longer term trend arises, it is given time to sort itself out before more permanent intervention. There's far less aggro here than most boards, whilst members are still able to express opinions, and I think the style of moderation helps.

Moderating? Personal attacks? This site is is a morgue compared moderating a Buffy the Vampire Slayer discussion forum with raging angry threads about changes to the TV credits and 10,000 posts about a spike/buffy romance and a thread dedicated to annoying fans of one character.

Personally I think anyone who takes personal attacks in threads personally needs to take a step back and realise that is just online life - the forums are essentially anonymous and none of us know who we are really responding to (my name might not actually be Simon - even if you have met me in person you still don't really know that my really is Simon). Some people take advantage of that - others are more open (interesting infograohic on this very topic http://4.mshcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Internet-Identies.jpg). I personally don't get stressed about it.

I am starting to get fed up with the Virgin can do no wrong posts but I guess they have done things that people wanted - I think the key difference between QF and DJ at the moment is that everything that DJ are adding improves the product above what was there - everything is a plus. Sadly for QF everything they add is going to be measured against what has been taken away - for example four or so years ago they built amazing new lounges - when DJ revamps their lounges we get "isn't this the best thing ever - hah QF is going down!!" as opposed to "great new lounge opened by DJ".

I personally am looking for a way to screen DJ posts out of the new posts feed but havent worked that out yet...

Sorry for the tardy reply, I am hardly ever off my iphone and it is difficult to reply/quote on the app.
The examples I was thinking of were the Flybuys/Velocity thread and the following post:

(SOME) Virgin pilots get (UP TO) a 28% pay rise!

Virgin pilot's having something to cheer for!

Also some more good news for Virgin, the first ATR has been dilivered earlier then thought! Link here: Skywest takes delivery of first Virgin Australia ATR | Australian Aviation Magazine

And some more, they plan to touch down in India: Virgin Australia to touch down in India

In more aviation news, Qantas offers mile high education... on female coughs, a jetstar plane was in terror after a pakcage was found, and passengers were terrified, jetstarJetBlue passenger pee's on 11 year old's leg, passengers get chest pains, and another vomited. Jetstar denies moving Melbourne operation HQ to Asia.

Interesting day!

What i'm not following is this:

1. Member posts a thread about new a new/interesting topic
2. Other members comment, throw a few opinions around and have a banter...

For those of you who complain about missing out of a good deal as it was lost in chatter or "chaos", perhaps the new deal should've had a new thread? So are you saying that you don't want opinion piece comments anymore on AFF?

I see the purpose of this board as a group of people discussing ideas and contributing their opinion - which is why threads exist is it not?

The rebuttal that theres too much banter and chit chat just shoots down the entire purpose for us being here in the first place. I have no problem with the way that things are going here on AFF, and I think that some of the opinions of certain members for being "too pro VA" is a unbelievable.

Remember - we VA supporters have been listening to QF fanbois ranting and raving over the past ten years about how great QF is!! Its our turn now ;)
