I'm not an OS expert, but I was wondering how much is considered OK for the curbside check-in service in the USA without being excessive?

I saw a sign last year wanting $5 a bag somewhere on the east coast.

$1 / bag is considered reasonable I think.

That's waaaay generous! Bet he was your best friend..

In Detroit I gave the lady $20... she saved me queueing inside and also went in to organize my 2 bags to be checked through to Melb.
But as it was my first time " curbside virgin" , I didn't realise how it worked and she politely informed me that it was a "tipped service" .... Woud pay for this service every time if it was available......

I too was a curbside "virgin" (flying QF/AA though)! I had two bookings, MIA-LAX on AA and then LAX-BNE on QF, but they were booked separately, not connecting. The curbside guy asked my itinery and then organised a connection for the luggage which meant I could have two cases for both the US domestic leg as well as the international leg. He also allowed me to rearrange my luggage and assisted by weighing a number of times until I had met the weight requirements (just) for all baggage, including carry on. All this was without him asking for money, so I asked him what was the procedure. He replied it was a "tipped" service, but still didn't suggest a figure, so as he'd mentioned he'd saved me $100 in baggage fees, I decided to give him half the saving.

I'm not disappointed with the outcome, but I was wondering what the standard was. Thanks for the comments!

It really depends upon the airline/port.

In BOS I believe AA porters went on strike due to the introduction of a $2 fee (seemed that PAX were simply 'tipping' $2, leaving nothing for the porter).

When we are faced with a monster wait we do the curbside deal. It is bad enough to get your shoes and belt off so the quicker you get your big bags handled the better. $20 for 4 bags as a tip works ok and of course they will tell you if they want more!

I thought international connections were not eligable for kerbside checkin, but from these earlier posts looks like I'm wrong:shock:

I think I may use this at LAX later this year when flying with Mrs Reggie and reggie jnr.
