So I'm thinking about going for WP for the first time ever using a JASA. I am 400 SCs short of making it and was thinking about what routes I could take (from ADL) and what the costs would be.

Open to suggestions from all the smart people here.

Thanks in advance.

If it was me, and considering the recently announced changes to the QFF program, I would not have SC's as my prime consideration.

ADL-SYD-LAX rtn comes in @ 480 SC
ADL-DRW-SYD-NAN rtn also @ 480 SC

or a wholly domestic JASA

ADL-DRW-PER-SYD rtn gives you 480SC
ADL-DRW-PER-PHE rtn gives you 440 SC

As for the worth of it, I guess that depends on your travel plans for the next year. FWIW F lounge at SYD/MEL is a nice bonus to have.

Responding to the original question.

My opinion is it's not worth 'chasing' WP for the following benefits above SG:
- F Lounge access
- A few extra FF Points
- Guaranteed Y seat 24 hours in advance
- Heavier luggage
(I think they are the main diffs- which provide little benefit for me).

Im happy to attain WP with my regular flying, but would settle for SG, having tasted both.

If you have too many spare frequent flyer miles, then by all means, go for it ;)

But for me, who hovers in the 50k-300k range, I can't afford to spend the points on JASA runs. Using 96K points for JASA runs for example can get 500sc on a double SC promo, great for status earning, but value wise, thats SYD to LAX in QF 388 J. I'd take the flight, but that's me.

Why would you need Platinum status?

Are you likely to access the Fisrt Class Lounges many times in the next year or so? The value there is marginal anyway.

For the extra 25% status QFF points? Definitely not worth it especially if most of your sectors are 1,000 QFF points minimum sectors.

First class Check-in? Only for international flights and certainly not worth the extra money over Business class check-in.

Anymore worthwhile benefits I have missed?

Extra luggage allowance and pieces but only really useful if you travel frequently and use the allowance.

But if you want status because you like flying for a hobby and want to do some extra flying then go for it....

You know your not a real FF Qantas FanBoy unless you have hit WP once !
I know I'm in the same situation so I have justified it (with help of the Double Status credit bonus) as a trip to see friends in CBR and HOB.. but without the DB sc runs its not worth it for me.

I'm with Samiam on this. I'd settle for SG.

If your normal flights got you to under 100 sc's to WP then I'd say push but 400 I don't think it's worth it. The Flounge is the only really nice extra that you get. As I live in Sydney and get to use it about 8 times out of the year it's a benefit but everything else it's all very marginal. I definately perfer to be WP over SG but wouldn't go to additional trouble to get there unless I was really really close... and I knew the year after I'd get there comfortably...

I think that if you do a fair bit of international travel then WP is probably worth it.

I'm not sure what you get as an SG in terms of seat selection, but as a WP I have pretty much been able to select the best Y and Y+ seats when traveling internationally. (This does make a difference when traveling long haul in Y.)

The First check in is nice and for the most part I have received express immigration cards incoming and outbound.

As a WP I do think you get looked after when things don't go as well as they might.

If your travel is mainly domestic I'm not sure it is worth the effort to collect another 400 SC's. There seems to be little to choose between SG and WP at the moment.

Hiya,

As a recent first time joiner of the WP club, I can fully understand your situation.

I went through this exact train of thought about 3 years ago, when there was a bigger gap between SG and WP benefits.

I ended up earning around 1100 SC's and was sorely tempted to go the extra, but of course, did not do it in the end. For me, it was fortunate, as the global financial crisis came and wiped out corporate travel, and I would have wasted the points/money. I was comp'ed an extra year in SG, then soft landed into PS.

I am still yet to visit the Flounge, and anticipate doing so this Sunday. However, my flight is at 10am on CX, probably have to leave the lounge at 9:30am. If I leave home at 8am, allowing 30mins to get to the airport, and another 30mins to get through to airside, then I only get a measly 30mins in the lounge. I would have eaten brekkie at home, and there's not really enough time to go the spa (and wouldnt know what they do there anyway).

Net benefit in Sydney = none.

I have a couple of hours waiting in HK for a connecting flight. This should be where I see CX's differential between J and F lounge for the first time. I hope to get a decent meal out of it, but I know the Jlounges are perfectly fine.

Not sure of your circumstances, but you might be better off saving the points/money to ensure you requalify for SG next year? I rate the benefits of SG much better than PS.

Hope that 2 cents helps.

and another 30mins to get through to airside,

30 Mins to get airside??? Are you carrying a gun? Express immigration and security should have you in the lounge within 15 mins at the absolute max!

Umm - I have guested you into the F lounge at HKG...

I was working with round numbers :)

Yes, I was guested in (and I was very grateful for that), but you should recall that I spent the whole time chatting to you, rather than taking a look/see tour around the place. I sat in a nicer seat, and that's all I remember (don't even remember getting a beverage). I do remember running for my flight as it was at gate 70, (and I was "nabbed" by the attendants at the moving walkways). It was the first time that I was the last person on board!!

Hence, I still have no idea what the main benefit of Flounging... (and still very much a n00b).

:)

I would rather spend time chatting to a fellow AFFer, than sitting on my own in a foreign airport lounge.
