Row 1 or 2 on QF 73H

Hi All,

Haven't flown domestic QF J yet (and have not been able to find a previous thread on this) and have the possibility to select row 1, 2 or 3. When flying BA or AY J in Europe I tend to avoid row 1 due to resticted leg room but is this the same for QF?

My personal preference on QF J (73H) is Row 1, more legroom and no reclining seat in front of you.

I’m 6 foot and have found it a stretch to rest my toes (figuratively, of course) on the front wall when in row 1. Though that’s now straight out, that’s in a comfortable position

I'd prefer row 1. the only slight negative is there is less overhead space above row 1

6'5" speaking here: there's technically more legroom in 2+3 but the lack of anyone reclining into you is the key so I always take row 1 when possible. It's not that big a difference.

My preference is row 2 only because (a) row 1 is hard to get with Advanced Seat Selection (yeah you could probably get it using OLCI), (b) bulkhead wall (possibly impeding into leg room, although reports on here say it's all fine), and (c) on the left hand side of row 1, half of the overhead is used for emergency / crew gear.

In any case, if the flight is sufficiently busy I strongly recommend boarding at your earliest convenience if you want to put your bag in the overheads. Needless to say, if the flight is full, you are in row 1 and the overheads are quickly filled, you may find your bag being placed some distance away from you, perhaps in the unwashed section.

As we are going to ADL for the National Band Championship I will be sure to be the first to board as the Mrs her French Horn is quite bulky (although just in the size restrictions). Last time we took it on a plane was to come here and it would not fit in the overhead locker so the crew put it in a locker (nose of 747). We have since gotten a new bag which is smaller but less protective so we want to be sure to put it away safely.

You also have to put any carry on in the overhead locker for take off and landing if sitting in row 1 so more women tend to like row 2 for that reason.

Aside from actually detesting flying in the first place, SWMBO has gone from a Bulkhead preference to a non bulkhead, so she can have her bag for takeoff and now is back to 'bulkhead', as not having the bag for takeoff/landing is a minor issue compared to bulkhead benefits.

Although when travelling with me I tend to force the issue, get bulkhead, and jump up and get the bag a millisecond after the seatbelt sign is off (best compromise for a happy flight).
