Is it just me...or as the cut off date now slipped to April 15,

Yes the cut-off date moved =)

more time to ponder over it...

You know I'd def get this card when I stop traveling so much... dunno if I want it right now... >< Priority Pass and Concierge would be awesome...

Yep....thats right April 15th.

Offer only available to new Platinum Charge Card members who apply, are approved by 15 April 2011, and spend $500 in the first two months of Card membership. Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for the 75,000 Bonus Points to be awarded to your account once the spend benchmark has been met.

Odd that it only slipped by a couple of weeks.

I am hoping for a major slippage as I am thinking of getting one for my wife. As I already have one from Oct...the later before I get hears the longer our insurance coverage. ie I would not renew mine.

I am thinking applying for this 75k bonus as well.

Just having a look at the travel insurance and from what I've read the main benefit is that you don't have to buy plane ticket with the Platinum Charge Card to be covered.

However this is on the offer page:

  • Complimentary Travel Insurance22 - if you have paid for travel with your Original Platinum Card, you would be covered for a range of travel insurance, including:
      • Unlimited Overseas Medical Emergency Expenses22 cover including Repatriation.
      • Travel Inconvenience Cover22 - things don't always go according to plan so with your Original Platinum Card you have the reassurance of knowing you would be covered against travel delay, missed connections and luggage setbacks.
      • Transport Accident Cover 22 - you would be protected when travelling on public transport.
However on the actual T&C.pdf it says:
ACTIVATION OF TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER:
By being an American Express Platinum Card member.

Does anyone know what's the real deal? Are supplementary card members auto-covered?

Thanks!

Hi DKC,
T&C Insurance ...
American Express Platinum Card member
means the basic holder of an American
Express Platinum Card, including the holder of any supplementary American Express
Platinum Cards, issued by American Express Australia Limited (ABN 92 108 952 085,

AFSL Number 291313), billed from Australia and in Australian dollars.

Cheers M.P.

Just got off the phone with AMEX and with the Platinum Charge Card the Insurance is automatically there regardless of how you paid for the travel.

The statement mentioned above "ACTIVATION OF TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER:
By being an American Express Platinum Card member." is correct.

For those who seem worried by all of this.

I am currently going through the process of making a TI claim using the insurance provided by the Platinum Charge card.

I have rung and sought assistance (read clarification) from the TI company a couple of times and have to to say I have been very impressed by the responses.

The hardest part seems to be collecting all of what is needed to attach to the claim. The claim will include airfares, a cruise, FF points for another airfare and some accommodation.

How did the claim go?

I'm looking at jumping on this card before it closes in 2 weeks, the travel insurance is a major draw factor for me.

Has anyone been able to obtain some sort of proof of insurance or policy number for the insurance? Some places overseas won't even start treatment without proof of insurance.

The claim has been delayed though not by the TI people. (I'm still waiting on the paperwork from the doctor)

Re proof etc there is a reverse charge number to ring Amex to start the process. I would consider that enough though I am no expert.

I applied and received the platinum charge card in November using the 75,000 platinum wish promotion.

I called up today to find out when the 75,000 points would be credited to my account and was told it was 6-8 weeks from the closing date of the promotion given as 31st March 2011. The customer service rep said that the allocation of the 75,000 points would be done at the same time for all applicants.

So far I'm pretty happy with the card and it's benefits. :)

What benefits have you utilised so far in the past 4 months? Care to share the experience with us? :)

Priority Pass - used the Air Canada Lounge twice at LHR T3 so far and will again this coming Saturday. Will be using it in the UK for non OW flights.
The Insurance is good, now reduce insurance I take when renting cars and no longer take up travel insurance.
1.5 Points per dollar is good. (Although can be achieved through other cards.)
I have the SPG Gold Card but have yet to see what benefits this will provide.

I haven't used the concierge service yet, not any of the travel services....but I will! :)

I've had it since January, and am very very happy.

  • Partner has a pre-existing condition that normally requires lots of doctor paperwork to get approved, and usually requires payments of extra fees. With this card, the definition of pre-existing condition is so good (not been to hospital in previous six months and not gone to doctor for condition other than usual specialist checkups) that we are both covered for everything when we travel now - it's the most generous definition of pre-existing conditions on the Australian market.
  • Refund Protection - Bought a new PC and then a newer model came out a few days, and computer shop wouldn't return it. Claimed under Refund Protection.
  • Took a series of flights with AA in the US where AA managed to lose both of my bags, in separate incidents - there was a 24 hour period where I didn't have any bags at all! It took a lot of stress out of the situation to know that I could spend up to AUD$700 on clothes and toiletries six hours after the delay, and AUD$700 more because one of the bags was delayed for several days. I have 3-4 days worth of new clothes now, as well as toiletries and grooming stuff. It made it so much easier knowing that I was just going to go shopping for more stuff - and it meant that I was laughing about the lost bags rather than worrying about them.
  • Rental car cover for peace of mind - used to take out policies with RACV for rental car cover - now I don't.
  • Use of Priority Pass for SYD DJ Lounge and the Continental Lounge at LAS, several times.
  • Used SPG Gold for bookings at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas. Room upgrades on both occasions were fantastic, and the extra points were nice. Now I almost have enough Starpoints for a free roundtrip US flight on AA!

In a few months, the fact it has made difficult situations seem easy and takes the stress and effort out of travel mishaps is reason enough for me to have the card. The 75,000 bonus points is just going to be icing on the cake.

I have had the card since March and once you've gulped and paid the $900 fee it is great.

Insurance covered Mrs G and baby G for travel to Dubai /UK, Fiji, Africa & NZ this year + all our domestic travel. I haven't had to claim purchase protection but did buy a new home cinema projector and the warranty is doubled. There is even a roadside assist that provides service free within 50km of home - which covers Mrs G's daily commute and saves an NRMA membership. We will use the free flight on the Reserve CC for a destination that will be make it worth at least $400, and of course there are the 75k points.

I used concierge to send flowers to Glasgow (very happy wife and not expensive), and to book at restaurants - great service & it is true they can get you a reservation that you couldn't get yourself. & let's face it, along with all the tangibles at the end of the day it just feels good to know you are packing something a bit special in the card department.

Is the priority pass access for the main member only or for all supplementary card holders as well? Thanks!

Hi All,

Had a question :) What is the link for this 75000 promotion? Also I already have a Platinum edge card and I already received the 20000 points. So the only way for me to get the plat charge card with 75000 bonus points is to keep the edge and apply for a new plat charge? or can I upgrade to the Plat charge and still keep the 75000 points?

Also if I had to get a brand new plat charge card and keep the edge, what will happen to my current membership reward points? can I still transfer to my current membership rewards account or will I have 2 MR accounts?

Cheers,
K.

The Edge is a CC and the platinum charge is quite different. You would apply for the charge card and as far as I know if you are in the right promo will be entitled to the 75k bonus points. Note there is a $900 pa fee for the charge card.
The platinum charge includes a Reserve CC for no fee, which Amex claim is superior to the Edge (although I would have preferred the Edge for the 3/2 points on shopping and petrol) as the free flight destinations include NZ.
I assume you will be "upgraded" from Edge to Reserve CC.
Your current MR account will be upgraded to ascent premium. Essentially you will score 20k points in exchange for the card fee you paid for your Edge CC.

Thanks for the info. I have been an AMEX member since 2004 and have paid fully on time every month. But my income (salary) is less than $100k. about 20k shy a year. I wonder if they will approve the plat charge for me?

This 75k offer had been extended to mid April 2011 so I applied this morning. However I just noticed that it seems to have been extended again to September!

"Offer only available to new Platinum Charge Card members who apply, are approved by 30 September 2011, and spend $500 in the first two months of Card membership. Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for the 75,000 Bonus Points to be awarded to your account once the spend benchmark has been met."

Also at the end of the application it says AMEX is upgrading their IT system and won't be able to get back to me regarding the application until after Easter.
