QANTAS Airways today said it will reduce international and domestic flying capacity, retire aircraft and cut management positions in response to natural disasters and higher jet fuel prices.

Australia's flag carrier said its second-half profit was now expected to take a $140 million hit from the cost of natural disasters, including flooding and Cyclone Yasi in Queensland and earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand. That financial impact would come in addition to an expected $25m hole from the grounding of its A380 super-jumbo fleet following an engine explosion last November.
Qantas said it was too early to estimate the likely impact of the events on its result for the 2012 financial year.

Domestic capacity growth in the six months to June 30 will be reduced to 8 per cent from 14 per cent, while growth in international capacity will slip to 7 per cent from 10 per cent, Qantas said.

Up to four weekly Jetstar flights from Australia to Japan will be suspended between April and August, as will a Qantas service between Perth and Tokyo, along with other changes, including the early retirement of two Boeing 767 aircraft.
Chief executive Alan Joyce said today: "We need to act decisively to respond to rising fuel costs and natural disasters, just like we did during the global financial crisis, to ensure the ongoing sustainability of our business."

Qantas to retire planes and staff!

Qantas Airways has announced a raft of cost-cutting measures including reducing capacity in response to rising fuel costs.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the measures included reductions in domestic and international capacity, retirement of aircraft, reduction of management positions and ongoing fuel surcharges.

The airline was responding to high oil and jet fuel prices and the impact of significant natural disasters in Japan, New Zealand and Australia, Mr Joyce said.

"The significant and sustained increases in the price of fuel is the most serious challenge Qantas has faced since the Global Financial Crisis," Mr Joyce said in a statement today.
In early trade, Qantas shares rose as much as 2.79 per cent or 6 cents, to $2.21.

Well it will finally be good to see once again the useless middle mgmt. getting the boot. Hopefully it will be at airports too!

What do people think about reductions in capacity (or reduction of capacity growth) as a survival mechanism?

I know that some specific areas of maintenence have also been targetted for voluntary redundancies.

I’d imagine a few people here might be happy with the retirement of two 767’s, assuming they’re the ex-BA ones.

I dont think they will be the BA ones as QF dont have the flexibility with these as far as leases go, its probably two of their aircraft they own.

Interesting that the article says
the early retirement of two Boeing 767 aircraft
Just how long were they planning on keeping them :!:

(I hope one of them is the aircraft which operated QF 548 last Friday .it rattled and rolled and shook more than Elvis.)

Qantas cuts capacity, routes, aircraft.

It's all over the news here today. Radio, TV and web.

Anyone suspect Buenos Aires might be on the chopping block in the not too distance future?

I'm not entirely sure what retirement of aircraft will do if it places more pressure on existing resources (although this is assumed that some aircraft are not being fully utilised and act as a "back up", e.g. if QF ground their A380 fleet again).

I'm not sure which aircraft I'd like to see go first - Jetconnect 734s, Mainline 734s or ex-BA 763s.

Once again the Japanese routes are the first to get a slice off. Definitely happened the first time the big bite of the GFC occurred.

They must be saving money by retiring B767's which have higher running costs even though this will stretch resources.

OGB was listed for sale recently.

767 For Sale or Lease on SpeedNews

With the A330 running to Manila, PER - NRT getting canned, and the newer dom A330's perhaps it has freed up a 767 or two.

- Cut capacity growth for the second half of the current financial year from 14% to 8% for domestic & 10% to 7% for international operations, - So still growth, just less of it?

I note that this is labeled as "group" it'd be interesting to see the Qantas/Jetstar breakdown - perhaps a further shift to Jetstar over Qantas?

I think that "unfortunate" shift was going to happen irrespective of the immediate plans.
