Airport Security....over the top?

But seriously thrown to the right areas (eyes, temple, mouth, jaw etc) at close distance it could hurt someone. Even holding golf ball in hand and bringing it down on someone's head by force could hurt. Believe me I know how much it could hurt and I would not advise anyone to do it to themselves.

Some of the bread rolls served up should be banned for the same reason then

Two words: heavy rollarboard.

Another two related words: instant bludgeon.

On a related note I know what you mean about the golf balls. Falling cricket balls, softball/baseball balls and shotputs are also notably dangerous.

And then there are these rather dangerous incidents (click this link).

You can throw the golf ball at a recliner, seat kicker, seat pincher etc! ;)

You know, a mobile telephone (such as a Motorola Razor) could do far more damage than a golf ball if used in the same ways.

So basically there are plenty enough dangerous items already on board an aircraft for some one minded to hurt another person and we all face and accept similar dangers on a day to day basis... baseball bats and cricket bats are probably reasonable not to bring on board, and don't fit in carry on luggage anyway, but i think the over the top stuff they could seriously take a break with...

and after 2001 i don't think anyone, not the pilots in the cabin or the crew and passengers outside, will ever allow a nutbag to get near the controls of an aircraft no matter how violent they get... no bunch of passengers will ever sit like trusting lambs thinking sanity will prevail, especially with one or two warning signs of the real nutbags wanting to make a one way statement as opposed to your drunken buffoon who has termporarily lost the plot over not being able to get another cold one or a child kicking their seat repeatedly.....

i think the chance of a plane being hijacked with a couple of golf balls is about as close to 0 as possible...

I still think the most effective weapon I've ever taken on board was my old carry on bag. The day it finally fell apart I was in the SYD QP and I saw the locking mechanism used a solid metal rod to connect the push button at the top to the lock at the bottom.

The metal rod was long, sharp and could have done an extremely large amount of damage to someone had I felt so inclined (and knew it was there), and yet had been through 100's of X-Ray scanners without anyone as much as batting an eyelid.

Needless to say, had security seen it without the bag surrounding it, I would not have been able to take it on board.

True. In times of danger many things we carry with us could be used as weapons or at least distractions.
