A

The only downside I see is that yo might get used to it and then flying in Y or even Y+ won't be the same again::lol:

How very very true :D

I don't know how everyone is so confident not knowing all the information :o :

1. how many points do you have (i.e. is the 45k 90% of your points?)
2. do you have any other trips upcoming
3. status level
4. how many travelers

PE to J on a 747.. I would have to think carefully.

If I was travelling alone I would probably risk it and reject hoping for the beep at gate (assumes you have status) - if they are cold calling people then seating is an issue. If you don't get the update PE is not that bad...

If it was me and greater than 50% of my available points I would decline this offer (A380 may swing it the other way for me due to the seat) and wait for a better opportunity.

Great site and don't often contribute so thought it was about time.

Having flown this sector in both cabins I would go the J for an overnight flight and not a lot of points for a much better sleep - if your not a great sleeper. That said I thogh Y+ with Qantas was still go for the $.

I'm with ab156 on this one. Y-to-PE would be a no-brainer... a few years back I was called and offered guaranteed PE for SYD/LAX The cost was 40k points (IIRC - does anyone know how to look back further than 12 months?? ) which was a brilliant option given that I had booked a junque-price non-upgradable fare.

I'm absolutely sold on the benefit of the PE seat over Y. I'm less sold on J over PE if it's my money or points, but my real answer for SYD/LAX depends on whether I have a day in LA to recover or have to go directly to some activity for which being absolutely awake is important. I work on the basis that the SYD/LAX leg is in Oz daylight hours so I'm unlikely to sleep that much on the plane, and while LAX/SYD is overnight it's on the way home where I can sleep in more comfort than a J seat. PE is a good compromise for comfort and seat power.

OTOH, I'd take the points upgrade offer without question for (SIN/BKK/HKG)/LON!

Depends, some of these guys here would have a million points in the bank, if you took two years to get 45,000 might be worth not upgrading and using those towards another trip entirely.;)

Interesting thoughts and advice. Wife and I are booked on PE on QF93 [380] MEl-LAX and return on QF94 [also 380]. I wasn't going to try upgrading on the way over until I tried out the PE but had thoughts of trying for the way back since its a night flight ex LAX

I agree with the majority of responses - J is definitely superior and the SYD-LAX flight is loooong - and if you have the points, 45K is not a lot. As an early respondent said, upgrades are what they're for! Enjoy your trip ...
