AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I don't think there's any chance of Amex getting Medibank and NRMA to reconsider.

I won't miss NRMA as GIO readily accepts Amex and more competitive too, as for Medibank, well I wish they will reconsider.
I normally paid yearly and mine is due in March...., so here's hoping..:(

Unfortunately for me, my interests are split across NSW and QLD, so I have to deal with Suncorp in QLD, who are absolutely NOT competitive. Even the guy I spoke to on the phone admitted that they were not one of the cheaper insurers.

Combined with the number of years and multipolicy discounts, NRMA are unfortunately hard to beat with my particular set of requirements.

Thanks but not worth the effort.

I think the important thing to recognise is that Amex aren't going to hold a gun to a merchants head and demand that they accept Amex. The best thing we can do is let the call centre know, and they will do their best.

By the way, I don't pull out my amex to buy fish and chips from a dodgy takeaway shop  nor would I whip out the amex to buy a bag or oranges from the local fruitshop?? Why would you even kick up a stink with the owner over a $10 spend?

My choice with how I wish to pay, and I wish to pay with Amex and maximise reward points.

I have a very good pizza shop that accepts Amex
A fish & chip show that accepts Amex
Most fruit/veggie shops around me accept Amex

$100 or so a week is 7800 points a year or about $550 in flights.

So why would you pay with cash ?

and GIO don't charge a surcharge either. i recently had a $15k business insurance bill with them . double points thank you.
recently had a $33K bill with another company and they charged $1,270.50 for the surcharge. now that was worth paying on AMEX as i had include the surcharge on the purchase order and include it with the business deductions.
am going to change my Workers Comp Insurance this year as the company being used at the moment doesn't take any Credit Cards at all. So they can stick it.

I would rather hand over a $20 note than wait for the swipe/sign process - but each to their own.

Wrong forum to be suggesting to pay with cash...

So an extra 30 seconds per transaction, so perhaps 2 minutes a week or 100 minutes a year

$500 for 100 mins work, OR $300 per hour in rewards... slightly more than my hourly rate of pay  LOL

So if your getting all hot and bothered with Amex because they can't influence merchants to accept amex, why don't you either a) shop elsewhere or b) get a visa - that way you can get your points. I just feel that you were quite critical of Amex several posts ago - and my suggestion is rather than bag out Amex, find alternatives.

1. I do shop elsewhere
2. I have multiple Visa cards and guess what... They don't offer the same rewards as Amex.......
3. If Amex are going to offer a service (report places that don't accept Amex) then I would expect them to actually follow it up correctly.
4. Please do tell me alternatives that will get me 1.5 points per $1 spent that I can transfer to about 7 major airlines including Qantas.

But thanks for your insightful assistance in this thread

Your welcome, lovestotravel

The best thing to come out of this is that my mate at Amex is aware of this thread, so if there are any issues (i.e. consultants not following up or giving bogus info) he is aware it's going on.

Ah ****e sorry, it was you that tipped off your mate :) I thought you were someone else that I had a beef with on here :oops:

 in my general direction

Apologies :)

If Visa or Mastercard offers the same rate of earning as Amex, then I guess this thread would be quite redundant.

Indeed - Amex wouldn't really exist if that was the case.

Well I do get 1.5 Singapore points per $1 spend when using the Westpac Singapore Airline card overseas at least.

Agree, then Amex can to go the hell and life will be much easier. But as I said you get what you pay, the more points you get from AMEX, the more merchants will charge you. AMEX charges more from merchants in order to give you generous points, merchants must charge you more in order to cover the cost from AMEX and finally we (consumers) are the only one who pay for that.

Unless things have changed recently I doubt you will be able to pay Workers Comp by card regardless on company.

i wasn't aware that there was an issue with that.
my "business insurance advisor" tells me that he takes credit card (with a surcharge of course). he is an independant operator.

I don't know about other states or companies but I have paid my Victorian Workcover Authority policy premium by mastercard using Bpay in the past.,not sure about Amex though.

I guess my experience is in NSW & dealing direct with the insurance company. Premium funding through an "agent" has been available but adds to the cost of the policy, as distinct from just straight payment to the insurer. All "charges/fees/commissions" are meant to be disclosed

if the bonus is that you can put it on you AMEX, then i think it is worth it.
if you can claim it as a tax deduction it's certainly worth it.

The trap there is that if the cost of earning points is tax deductible then the benefit would be taxable. I can't see the ATO letting you have your cake and eat it.
