Do OneWorld airlines not talk to each other?

I'm trying to book my flights back after my xmas trip home, and I'm finding what seems a really silly bit of scheduling... QF and CX both run overnight services from BNE to HKG every other day, but at the same time...

IE
QF has one at 11.15pm then CX has one at 00.50am then you have to wait 48 hours and it repeats, except on satuday and sunday nights when they both run both nights.

It's like waiting for buses! And a right pain after the new year public holiday on the 3rd...:mad::mad:

They might be in an alliance, but airlines still have to be careful how much information they share. AA and BA (and a few others) have only just been allowed to start talking to each other re: trans atlantic routes...

Besides, no HKG-BNE flights every second day is hardly a deal breaker, I'm sure you could easily find HKG-(SYD\MEL)-BNE without much trouble.

of course, you can fly via syd or mel, but that means leaving the house at about 4pm instead of 9pm... which on a public holiday is not so good. not to mention the extra 5 hours of travelling.

When I say talk to each other, I mean maybe read each other's schedules and fill in gaps rather than fly al their flights at once.

I've noticed this on other routes as well... must be something to do with cheap time slots at the airports or something... for instance LHR to BKK as very similar timings between QF and BA. These similar timings happen for the singapore route too.

I think the reason is that overnighting to HKG means that pax can actually connect to other parts of Asia (mainly China) in early morning, rather than getting to HKG at night and force people to stay overnight.

The LHR timings also allow a late afternoon arrival into SIN/BKK, followed by overnight and subsequently early morning arrival into Aus. That's probably the major attraction of those timings.

I dont believe the slots are "cheaper" per se, but am happy to be corrected.

Exactly my point, but you are not able to do that on Tuesday mornings, Thursday mornings, or Saturday mornings because there is no flight getting into HKG from BNE (but two flights getting in on each of the other 4 mornings!)

Even though they are in an alliance, they still compete. I guess they both know which days of the week have best loads and neither wants to operate the days that don't carry the higher demand.

CX also has daytime flights too, not sure if QF does anymore, so you can either leave at night or during the day/the morning. Depends if you get CX102/103 or CX156/157 and if it’s going via CNS or not. There is a decent bit of choice there.

QF no longer has a daytime option BNE-HKG :(.

Daytime ones are great if you are just going to HKG and would definitely be my choice in that case, but I have to connect to KA950 leaving at 10.40am so given the choice of a daytime flight and a night by myself in a hotel in HKG or an overnight flight and an extra day with my family, the o/n is much preferable!

Yeah they switched all routes to night only, kind of strange.

Just means you have to fly CX.

FWIW, my parents generally mix the flights up, coming over on the overnight flights and going back in the day. I’m sure this increases ticket costs, but they couldn’t do so if the flights weren’t available. And occasionally my dad has flown back to HKG to arrive in the morning, catch the Airport Express into town and teach not an hour later at HKU :p

I do the same as much as possible;

The day flights from HKG suck as they require an OMG wake up time ...

Not strange really, the old timings meant onward connections were limited to very late night flights which were not readily available to more of the popular destinations, now you have a while day of connection possibilities (and more threads on AFF about short-long transits in HKG and what to do).

These changes are a real pain, whether you are only flying to HKG or connecting to Europe. A few years back, both QF and CX had daytime flights that left BNE around lunchtime and got to HKG early to mid-evening. But then they decided to change all (QF) or most (CX) to overnights.

So now if you're only going as far as HKG, you end up arriving there in the morning and most likely being unable to check into your hotel for several hours!

It really wasn't a problem if you were transitting to Europe either, because CX and BA have flights to Europe that leave HKG around midnight, so your mid-evening arrival at HKG suited that perfectly!

Now to do my daytime flight to HKG I generally have to travel to SYD first. Stupid.
