Just did a search on the QF website to go to Honolulu in October in Business class and was shocked to see a price tag of $11306... and this is to sit for almost 10hrs on a 767 in domestic J class seats

There must be better and cheaper ways to go there I am sure.

I did a similar thing yesterday and was stunned - $30K for a family of three in J...

Qantas has released a new fare today for Travel from 1 October to 31 Jan (purchase by 31 Oct) which is selling at around $5986 per person in J class although it is booked in I class, so availability may not be great. It may be worthwhile checking their website again to see if it is availability issue. Of course there is always HA at 3646 per person, or JAL at 5400! Makes Star Class Jetstar look very attractive!

Yes there is a much cheaper way to get to Hawaii - it's called Jetstar's Star Class. While Jetstar like to refer to it as Business, it's more comparable to Premium Economy. The seat is the same as QF's Domestic Business Class seat, but leather.

Good value, expecially if you can pick up a sale - which I've managed to do every year since Jetstar started flying to Hawaii. :)

There is always FJ in a 737 with a technical fuel stop LOL

mmmmm sitting on a 737 for over 7 hrs and a stop in Samoa look very attractive indeed :D total journey time of 13.50.
And all this fun for $8000 and a night stop in NAN on the way back...

Unless they've changed the planes, the "J" on QF is pretty comparable to Star Class anyway so I'd be taking JQ.

Umm seriously? Wouldnt the QF option be a dreamtime seat on a 767?

QF seating 1-2-1
JQ seating 2-3-2

QF pitch 51in
JQ pitch 38in

If you guys need any help, I've got access to some QF private fares that are year round and cheaper than the I Class sale.

The I Class special is out until 31 October, the standard gross fare aside from that is usually $8412++ ex SYD.

PM me and i'll point you in the right direction if you want some help.

QF is 1-2-2

Oops - that is what I meant to type :(

Still theoretically better than 2-3-2 - although for familygr 2-3-2 would actually be better with one of us on either side of toddlergr restraining him...

Sorry for being lazy but what is the schedule for QF metal to HNL? I know JQ is 12346 departing SYD at 18:00.

I think the savings by flying QF in Y would put a smile on most peoples faces because once you arrive in HNL what have you got to show for the thousands of dollars you have shelled out for the J seats apart from a few more ff points or SC?

If you're not travelling with kids under 15 you could always pay the extra to have an emergency exit seat to get more leg room.

Why not use some of the money you save by not travelling J to splash on the accommodation at the other end which you would spend more time staying in than your J class seat on the way there.

That has been the general idea here. Nice accomodation and still more then enough left for a status run to AUA and a couple of days there. And this will be cheaper then J seat.

I agree with OzBeachbabe - alot of money for 10hours in a seat, that can buy absolute luxury on the ground.....having said that, being the J/F flyer that I am, and always looking to save a $K or two where possible, something I might have tried looking into (if your willing to do all the baggage rigmorole) might be going AKL-HNL-AKL on NZ0009/10 paying in NZ dollars will cost you about AUD$4500 (J). Then perhaps use the everso popular SYD-AKL-SYD on LAN premiumJ, pay in US$ will cost you about AUD$600. Alot cheaper than $10K, but alot of mucking about. or in for a penny in for a pound - come back from AKL-SYD on emirates F-suite, pay in NZ$ will cost you about $920AUD.

P.S - compare apples with apples - for the same price as your 767-J ticket to HNL, I can fly from Sydney to London in a 1st Class suite on Etihad, stopping in 1st class lounge in Abu Dhabi, whilst being chauffered in a limo to and from the airport as part of the airfare ticket cost........

I have seen this argument numerous times before and personally for me it doesnt stack up. I would plan to stay in decent hotels anyway so that for me is a sunk cost. The benefit I gain from going to an even better hotel would be fairly marginal over the course of the trip. Conversely a better flight there would be substantially different and if coupled with extra FF points and SCs I would see a reasonable amount of long term benefit.
