New Mobile Check-In

What is the point of a huge boarding pass to just give name of passenger, seat number, origin, destination, time of flight and now a barcode; seems a sensible measure and long overdue.
A large boarding may not seem sensible to you but is perfectly logical to me. I refuse to use any type of web browsing on my mobile phone and thermal paper receipts are just pure garbage.

If you do not like the large boarding pass just throw it away. What do I do for a "boarding pass" now?

The large BPs had more relevence when the large part was kept and used to verify numbers etc ; with it all on computer plus that they don't even take the large portion anymore, what is the point of them
I would like to have the boarding pass as a souvenir of the flights I have done. The garbage they are offering on thermal paper is just that. It does not last more than a couple of months.

I always do throw the large rubbish away; once onboard detach the stub and keep it in case points don't credit and then bin the rest.

For a boarding pass, you can get one from a machine or check in online and print one off before going to airport or , coming soon, use the rfid in the membership card; anything that enables boarding is a boarding pass

Id rather they save costs there than cut back further on aspects of the actual flight itself; QF is not exactly the world's best airline for premium cabin imo . That a few people might want to keep them doesn't seem like a good reason to keep them to me

Well..... Call me old fashioned...... I love the older style boarding cards.

I don't keep them for nostalgia, nor do I throw them straight in the bin. They turn up at the bottom of my suitcase or laptop bag. Back in the days before the advertising was printed on the back they were used for writing notes. I have used them as bookmarks... an "urgent" toothpick once, as well as to gain entry to the aircraft. Very versatile really.

I was on a flight from Mel to Adl on Tuesday aftenoon after getting the boarding pass which had been issues in Adelaide when I left that morning.
I was in my seat, and the cabin crew were wandering up and down the plane looking for "something or someone".
Eventually, one of them came up to me, and nice and loudly asked "Are you Mr L".
I answered "Yes, Why?" and she said "my boarding pass did not show up on the report".
I wasn't sure where this was going, so I just sat there in silence, smiling at her, and then she said "we can leave now".
I have no idea what their problem was, but I certainly had everyones attention for a few minutes!

:) The boarding probably didn't scan correctly, so they came to check if you had actually come on board or not.

I've got many a book on the shelf with an old BP in it. Pity they don't have the year on them as I have no idea myself unless it's a rare destination.
Best bookmarks ever.

What about the second check as you're entering the plane? "Thank you Mr Scumbag, the far aisle and 23 rows down..."
Are they going to be looking at small phone screens as well?

Anyone? (10 characters)

I doubt it with Qantas - I believe the idea is to print out a "supermarket docket" type receipt that you retain for showing the on-board staff and proving you actually were on the plane (ie later FF point claiming ;) )

Other airlines do it differently. I did post earlier in the thread about my experience with BMI - having to pull out the phone and show them a MMS message which only showed the flight/seat number for a few seconds before going through a loop of three different sized barcodes was frustrating. There is a pause button of course, but I didn't use it. Boarded ok. Would have been problematic if I had a seating conflict or similar though.

article with a similar pic to what 737 posted in the April in-flight mag.

Cant see anything different on the mobile site however

I still prefer the Big oldfashioned boarding passes. Something about them infers quality.

The thermal ones that Virgin and the like use are rubbish, feels like cheap quality.

Barcodes, whether on Cardboard or iPhones et al are so passé ...

.. the AirNZ Domestic RFID chip does the job nicely ...

Well it seems the mobile checkin is now live and can access it on any type of colored mobile phone... It askes for your mobile number and sends you an MMS with a 2d barcode on it.. If u have no bags it is a good idea as u just scan your phone at the gate and prints off the docket thing nice and quick.. And with bags, you can now seemingly use the 'online checkin' queue, but those scanners seem not able to scan that 2d barcode and need to enter details manually.

I used my Nokia N73 to access Qantas Mobile and noticed that there is a Domestic Check-In option in the menu.

It kinda sucks though that you need to enter your PNR and last name. Yes, you can use View My Booking from the main menu to find your PNR by entering your FF details and accessing your list of bookings, but it shouldn't take you long to realise how coughbersome that is.

Won't get a chance to test it until this Friday (I fly on Saturday). If even then (no idea if BNE is prepared for this).

I collect BPs so I always try and get a cardboard BP where I can. This weekend won't be any different, and even if this system becomes vogue, I hope they don't completely get rid of cardboard BPs (although I think in some point in the future, they will :().

I'd imagine that if you had bags to check-in but you have your mobile BP, you would just front up to the desk and tell them you have a bag to drop. Now how they will get you to scan your BP (or perhaps you just show them) I don't know. Maybe that will constrain you to go back to the old system (until a better bag drop technique is implemented).

Finally, funny enough, whilst a couple of old JQ supermarket style thermal paper BPs have long faded away (about 4 years old now), I still have a few thermal BPs from QF SSCI machines of age about 1-2 years which are still perfectly fine. (Of course, I don't leave my BPs out in the sun, but beyond the point...)

IMHO this is a sensible cost to cut - the only reason I would normally keep a boarding pass is until said flight shows up on my activity statement; it gets shredded at that point. Let's face it, domestic flights really aren't anything special. Keep a spreadsheet of flights taken if you want a reminder.

How come I always have problem with Qantas web site?

I tried to check in on my mobile phone, earlier this month, and it kept coming back that it could not find my booking reference! So no online check in :(

I would be one of the few who goes against general consensus of this discussion. I would like to use my mobile for everything. A mobile is easy to use, is always in my hands, don't need to search for a piece of paper in my hand luggage which is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I don't think it is very environmental friendly to print something out just for the purpose of 30 minutes.

This is a serious question - even though I'm not an Apple fan.

What happens when someone checks in with their Ipad? Or, checks in with their laptop?

While the screen is big enough, it really doesn't fit under the barcode reader...

You get the normal A4 size PDF boarding pass, which you need to print out.

The web site checks what browser you are using. If it is a desktop version of Internet Explorer / Firefox / Opera, you get the normal full version of Qantas web site, with all the features and ads and pretty looking banners. If it detects your web browser as iPhone / Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile / Opera for Windows Mobile / S60 (Nokia), then the web site would give you a simplified version of Qantas web site, which is text only, and give you a link to online check in immediately.

Try it, just use your mobile and go to qantas.com

Strange - my booking wasn't eligible for mobile check in - told to check in online or at the airport. I wonder if it is because the return in is the following day...

Probably have an exit row? Or you maybe said 'yes' to having DG's?
