New Mobile Check-In

I hope the new scanners completely replace the ancient pieces of cr*p that Qantas use at most domestic gates. It's amazing how long it takes the barcode scanner sometimes for the quickcheck paper BPs. Must be frustrating for ground crew and probably slows down boarding by a fair bit.

I vaguely remember last time I flew with DJ a couple of years ago theirs scanned the BP first time and sped up the whole boarding process quite a bit, or it seemed to me at the time anyway.

They're not very 'ancient'. They've only been installed in the past 4-5 years for the barcode. Prior to that, the Mag Strip reader only machines were in place.

There actually just coming up to four years old, the new scanners were installed when OLCI was launched Oct 06.

I dont think the scanners are any slower than any others, its the backgound programming that is slow once the operator gets it right, the system checks to make sure that the boarding pass presented was the latest version/seat allocated, some like to chop and change, myself included.

But why not just show your phone instead?

Josh:p

Many practicalities with having a paper boarding pass (even though it may sound simpler to use ur phone instead.

- From a safety p.o.v. if boarding via the Tarmac, of course everyone will have your phone switched off, so therefore we can't see the boarding pass.

- From a service p.o.v. we would use your physical boarding pass to identify you jacket if we were hanging it in the coat locker (or if you Y pax hang your yourself :p)

- One could be in the middle of a phone call (which u had to put on hold to scan your phone) and were continuing on it till it had to be turned it off.

This can be VERY frustrating, especially in ADL and CBR... If we are ever on the 734 with only 4 crew, and only one F/A is at the boarding gate, the line always goes so slow because the damn boarding readers take their time :)

*Just a note on that, for all ff's, technically with the boarding readers, how they work is a 'BEEP' means that the reader has recognised the barcode/magnetic strip only, it isn't til a green or red light flashes that the information has been processed and you are either accepted or denied. This is why the boarding readers are so slow, it will 'BEEP' and the pax thinks they have been accepted, but I as an F/A am supposed to wait for the green light (which doesn't make a subsequent noise) to ensure that you have been accepted. Confusing, I know, but thought I would let you all know :)

Interesting, what happens if you’re distracted momentarily and fail to see a red or green light, can you do it again, or is there a big problem then?

The light stays on until the next scan or boarding is finalised from memory.

Don't know if this is relevent, but...

I received my new QFF Gold card a week ago, and unlike the old one which had embossed writing, this was flat, but also on the back was a barcode. Is this part of the scheme to use your QFF card as the boarding pass (and get the print out when you board?)

Reported as far back as September 2009. Some like it (LW), most hate it :p

We got new boarding passes today at baggage check and it was interesting to note that the traditional boarding pass was really no quicker by the time it ran back and forth and digested the information. The paper ones probably just seem slow as nothing seems to be happening.

Interesting but no thanks.

I'd much rather have a paper boarding pass or the RFID implementation IMHO.
I cannot understand why they do not continue with cardboard boarding passes. Stupid cost cutting measures.

There must be a substantial cost saving in using receipt-like tickets. Shame they probably wouldn’t break it down for us though. Probably also partially better for the environment.

Just wake me up when they’re implanting chips in your hand to do all this, will be much better :D

/goes to bed to dream about sci-fi…

Usually a single beep will mean that it has gone through, but we have to make sure by waiting for the green light. When it is being rejected for whatever reason, it usually goes 'beep, beep, beep' to get your attention. We are supposed to wait for the green light to go off before we scan any more boarding passes, as this can stop the next one from scanning properly and can cause delays in checking that you are actually boarded.

If we don't see a light, or are confused as to whether it processed, the computer screen tells us whether it is boarded or what the problem is. If I tried to scan an already boarded passenger it would just scream at me with a red light and lots of beeps, :p

What about the second check as you're entering the plane? "Thank you Mr Scumbag, the far aisle and 23 rows down..."
Are they going to be looking at small phone screens as well?

Interesting but no thanks.

What is the point of a huge boarding pass to just give name of passenger, seat number, origin, destination, time of flight and now a barcode; seems a sensible measure and long overdue. The large BPs had more relevence when the large part was kept and used to verify numbers etc ; with it all on computer plus that they don't even take the large portion anymore, what is the point of them

Nothing really, but I would hate to see QF become as cheap looking as JQ or TT
