Little things I like

Dreaded assumed disaster did not occur.

Have a hire car for a week or two. Popped down to the public swimming pool 3km away. Stowed my possessions and entered the pool, walked through the water to the other end where I do my exercises and sensed something wasn’t right.

Felt in the bathers pocket and there is the fob for the rental car that had become detached from my other keys. 😳

Quickly jumped out of the pool and dried fob on my towel. After the session an hour later walked to the car fully expecting having to call RACQ and fork out an arm and a leg for a new fob.

But no! Car opened and I drove home. Been out and about all day yesterday and today and continuing to work fine. 🤗

Phew - LTIK.

Back in the day from 1964 to 1968 I worked at the Redfern Mail Exchange.
On the first day there a strike was called. Being a lefty back then myself and an Italian back packer were the only 2 who refused to cross the Union’s picket line.
We were called out and I feared that I was going to have a very short career as a postal worker. However we were sent to the postal workers school. Basically just memorising lists of towns that got their post through Redfern and the groups of countries where mail was delivered and their incoming postal items.
So I got to being a level 7 postal worker which meant I could become a Forman of a shift. The Forman of the regular night shift was the Union representative. So he was impressed by my not crossing the picket line. So I was given the opportunity of being foreman of the casual night shift. Then he said he normally sleeps on his shift but would cut that back to 5 nights and I could sleep 2. Another part of the deal was joining him for a beer or 2 at the early opener on the walk to Central.

I was also taught how to make the sorting machine to stop. One of the things that caused this action was postcards of ##### women. The best ones were kept back for a few days.

06:00am opening very handy. In my misspent youth I'd play poker all night, then we'd retire to a pub at Adelaide East End market which had early opening.
Now 10:00pm is a late night
those were the days drinking in some of those pubs in the East End - I just found some photos of me in the Exeter in the early 70s -sighhh

Up until at least the 1970's pubs in Fremantle could open at 0600 to cater for the wharfies - and other shift workers .
Melbourne was the same. Certain pubs could trade 10pm to 10am for shift workers. There were a couple up in North Melbourne for the markets, The Waterside at the bottom of King Street, and in Port Melbourne. The North Port Hotel was a few doors up from where we lived there in the late 70's and opened at 6 am and served counter breakfast. Very handy for poor starving students like us.
