I assume they’ don’t have anyone wishing to transfer to Sydney, even for more cash.

It’s the same in my corporate, next to nobody ever transfers QLD/VIC into Sydney, even after cash incentives thrown around. House pricing is a huge driver of that unless one wishes to live out in the sticks.

On Sunday 6 September, Channel 7's 1800 hours Melbourne news reported that there were two (45 minute?) periods when for 'the first time in years' flight crew would have to report their positions over the 'tannoy' to other aircraft, the requirement being blamed on a shortage of SYD air traffic controllers.

I was some distance away from the TV but from memory one period today may have been around 1700 hours and the other from c.1900 hours. It was claimed this would (only?) affect flights between SYD, CBR and MEL. The report claimed some flights would have to use extra fuel and some may even be diverted.

As at 1836 AEST there don't seem to be substantial delays to flights on these sectors, but 1836 is from memory outside the two time bands referred to.

What a ridiculous thing for Channel 7 to say. A tannoy is a British term for a loud speaker. Why not just say they have to radio their position?
