Sydney Ground Tours closing June 30

Disappointing. I passed up the opportunity to do this tour at AFF#3 last October as I had another engagement on the Saturday, assuming I could do it at a later date. I guess I still can, but I also guess I'd better hurry up!

Sad myself. about this ..

I did it at OzFest II in 2005.

Are security issues the real reason?

tuapekastar,

I am sure an AFF group tour could be organized.

June 30 would seem to be a strange date to cut it off if that were so?

The cynic would say it has something to do with MacBank, and either not enough revenue to them, or some other similar issue.

It is amazing what happens under the guise of 'security reasons'.

+1 for being unhappy about this. This is one of the more unique air experiences and its a real shame to see it go.

Helping people better understand how an airport works helps them understand some of the finer points of air travel, such as why the heck you need to be checked in and bag drops and just how many people it takes to get you off ground safely.

In the words of Hinch: shame, shame, shame.

Hey all. I was glad to attend our AFF#3 tarmac tour last year on one of the rare occasions I been home in last 3 years..

It was fantastic.. I dont know why there would be any security issues.. The process for getting into the airside was thru normal passenger security.. Our escort was great.. very knowledgable..

Sounds to me like a contract or the usual BS insurance costs issue..

Get in and do one while you can.. well worth it !!

If you look at the links posted by Must...Fly! then you may note "Tarmac tours" are continuing, but they will be operated by another company.

SACL are giving the originators the @rse ...

Which is the problem.

They told the company running it now that they are not renewing the contract and it would not be offered to any other company.

But it has since emerged that another company HAS been approached by SACL to take over the tours. This is grossly unfair and why I am so annoyed at SACL.

Umm.. why is it unfair

Both sides entered into a contract for a specific period of time; it doesn't sound like SACL are terminating the contract early. There is no right to a contract extension

Whether SACL decide to terminate tours altogether or sell to another company, there is nothing unfair.

Reputable companies run these type of contracts through a tender process without which they have no real idea of whether they are getting maximum value :!:

Does that say anything about SACL :?:

Is it fair, is it reasonable, is it ethical and does it show integrity :?:

When in business it is never good to tell lies as it catches you out and people think poorly of you.

It is completely unfair to not renew a contract and tell the current operator that tours will cease and no one will be taking it over, to then offer the contract to another operator who will take it over.

Having taken the tour many times (back when I was a regular on the YSSY forum and lived in Sydney) you couldn't ask for a more professional outfit than the current operator. They abided by every rule SACL imposed on them, even the totally stupid 'no cameras allowed' rule (although you can take pictures on the INT-DOM xfer bus - go figure).

If the report is true that the current operator was informed that the tours would cease and no one else would be operating the tour, and SACL have then awarded a contract to another operator, the current operator certainly has grounds to pursue legal options against SACL (but I have no idea what the situation really is, I'm just stating my belief).

If the contract has just expired ( rather than terminated ) then I see no grounds that they could pursue anything. Once the contract has expired then there is no contract
