A very Anglo thing I believe, but might have started from the UK.Interestingly is “pie” an aussie thing? Europe trip for 6weeks last year I did not see pie on a menu anyway once. (Didn’t actively seek out but an idle observation after 2-3 weeks.)
Americans have pies, though usually it's the larger pies that you normally share. Of course, amongst other things, Americans have the pumpkin pie.
Not really any pies in Europe, and it's a borrowed word in their languages. The French have pâté en croûte which looks like a pie, but is served sliced and cold. Sometimes that dish name is also used to refer to a pie.
