Domestic flights from Melb/Syd international terminals

Thanks,

The flight numbers are different e.g. Melb to Cairns is JQ34 & Cairns to Tokyo is JQ25. However, it's all under the same booking reference as it's booked together. So fingers crossed.

Seems like there are a couple of JQ domestic flights from Sydney & Melbourne that fly into Cairns International terminal during the morning and then funnel passengers onto JQ flights to Tokyo and Osaka in the early afternoon.

It's good to see that this may have all been finally sorted out, as having to use the Cairns domestic terminal was a bit of a pain e.g. getting luggage and checking into another flight etc.
Actually I'm not sure how they'd process you as JQ34 - JQ25. I have to assume they process you as JQi - JQi and do the transfer however confirm this at check in.

Thanks, I definitely will ask at check-in, better to be safe than sorry. However, considering the international check-in from Melbourne and landing at Cairns International, I'm fairly confident luggage will be automatically transferred to the Tokyo flight. I'd be shocked if it wasn't.

I wonder how many people screw up and go to terminal 4 Melbourne to check-in to this flight!

Based on this report you will need to collect your bags at Cairns and check it in again.

I did this flight in economy around a year ago, mainly because it was actually the cheapest flight for the date/time I needed. But the risk of lengthy delays (anyone know why these flights are so unreliable?), isn’t worth the hassle, even with F lounge access. I’d consider doing it in business if the price was cheap enough!

I still remember the check in process being horrible with no online check in, everyone has to line up for manual check in. Can’t use the business class queue with QF status, you have to be flying business. Despite knowing they had a full 787 of people to check in, they only had 2 desks open, and they were meticulously weighing everyone’s carry on luggage which slowed things down even more as people rearranged and re-weighed. It took about an hour just to check in.

Going through security wasn’t too bad, and still had time for QF First dining. But things got pretty bad from here. Boarding was called, and it actually started on time at the gate, but it turned out we were just boarding onto the jet bridge to stand still there for at least 30 minutes. When we finally boarded onto the plane (which also took forever on a full 787) we were then told engineers were fixing a system issue that was preventing refuelling. That took about an hour, then further delays were blamed on a paperwork issue and air traffic control. We eventually departed over 2 hours late!

Also don’t forget the 787 blocks most of your mobile signal, so you can barely use it during the long delay on the ground. Important if you need to update anyone waiting for you at the other end that you’ll be quite late!

The next shambles was after landing and arriving at the gate, they waited until after the seatbelt sign went off before announcing for domestic passengers to stay seated while connecting passengers to the international flight to disembark first. Everyone was already out in the aisle and getting their luggage down.

Oh and finally, customs take your boarding pass so take a photo of it if you were on a Max/Flex bundle for QFF points. You’ll probably have the chase a manual credit of those and it’s impossible without a boarding pass!

Here's a question.... how necessary is it to actually get on the plane? Could I book SYD-MEL JQ international for me and a friend, check in three hours early and gorge ourselves in the FLounge (one of us is WP), then cancel the flight before boarding and just go home?

You could, but you'd probably need to explain yourself to the F lounge and ABF. They'll let you through but you'll probably get flagged at some point.

ABF won't flag for that unless you're doing it repeatedly. Might get a bit antsy if the person didn't know what to do - its a rare scenario.

ABF won't, but Qantas will. I'd be surprised if no airline doesn't flag it immediately after the story of the Chinese man circulated everywhere in the internet. (He used this for almost a whole year of free meals).

I guess that was different as he wasn't travelling and requested a refund each time requesting a full cash refund (something not possible on JQ).
