Qantas A380 New Route Speculation

So are new orders for anything from Boeing or Airbus.
Lead times of 3-7 years (depending on model) for new orders.
Don't they have additional purchase right options split between the 787 and A350 families as well, which could potentially get them earlier in the delivery queue?

Purchase rights are even later in the queue.

Qantas's current order book is
46 321 XLRs with 16 in lie flat config (2 already delivered)
12 350 1000 Sunrise variants from late 2026
12 350 1000 regular variants from FY28
12 787 - 4 787-900, 8 787-1000 from FY27

And Jetstar also has a bunch of 320neo and 321LR and XLRs on order.

With rights for 321 Neos generally as well as 35K and 787s.

Repositioning to LAX off for the time being, but test flight tomorrow still on.

As of 4 December (our time - morning), this A380 still appears to be in LAX.

When it is likely to enter revenue service? Pre-Christmas, it's starting to get busy, and this will increase in the next couple of weeks.

Just blame Alan Joyce for the stupid decision to scrap
EY and QR made similar decisions at the time.

QR reluctantly returned theirs to service - pretty quickly due to other woes. But scrapped the plans to fit a QSuite variant. Which was a huge shame. The J seats have gone from best in class (at the time) to sub-par. Offset by a nice bar.

EY are only operating 7 of 10. Apparently 2 more will return to service.

Qf had always struggled with routes for #11 and #12 flipping between HKG, SIN potential ORD/ SEA but never quite for it too work, so I actually think the decision was reasonable.

And once the Sunrise 350s start arriving (alongside other 350/787s) we may well see future other 'early' retirements. What they do with the F cabins will be interesting.

Emirates also still has a number of grounded A380s.

Thanks. I knew another airline did but couldn’t remember which one!
KE too I believe. A380/747-8 were originally slated for retirement around now as I believe they're betting on a 777X future. So there is a very uncompetitively product on the 380 for KE. I believe their F seats can barely compete with other airlines J seats. Although the 747-8 is a better setup. (I believe KE also has the last passenger 747 ever built too). That being said OZ (Asiana) side might be kept longer as those are a lot more updated. Interesting to see what the post merger airline does with their combined 12 a380 fleet.

The previous comments from various are more the observation with “20:20 Hindsight”, that scrapping just one may have averted some of the scheduling woes given that it’s taken ages to get back to just 10.

Can’t see the F cabins going anywhere. They’ll leave them in situ like the last 4 class 744s. A nice perk for WPs and above! At least the Skybeds are gone! The last 744s still had slippery, slopey SB Mk I. I enjoyed the old QF F seat (flying J) on SYD-JNB, EZE-SYD and SYD-HNL.

But plenty of other aircraft to pick up the slack. SQ probably similarly?

SydSquad covering the landing tomorrow morning.
