UPS MD11 crash on take-off in Kentucky

Didn’t bother given I had viewed the NTSB conference some 12 hours earlier. As I said I don’t bother with such content as it’s just rehashing press releases etc without asking questions like why the airline said it was not late when it clearly was? There used to be a book series called xx_x for dummies, I regard youtubers and most travel/frequent flyer blogs as the modern day equivalent

Didn't NTSB just say there was no maintenance? They didn't say there was no delay. So what's unclear is why was there a two hour delay.

The NTSB guy said, relying on what UPS told them 'to date', and in response to a question about a rumour of a maintenance delay:

* the plane was "not delayed" and there was "not maintenance work done immediately before ..."

They will investigate etc etc

From 7:05 in the Browne clip I posted.

Latest NTSB briefing.

Death toll increased to 12 with 9 more missing/ unidentified.
Voice and data recorders successfully downloaded including 2hrs of audio. Transcription and preliminary analysis over next few days.
FOD walk on runway has identified engine parts inc blades in advance of the main engine debris.
UPS statement reiterated that no delays or recent maintenance on that aircraft, albeit a suggestion it may have been swapped in for another aircraft.

The NTSB guy runs these briefings really well - displays humanity, dignity, and communicates well.

And he repeats the questions from the floor, so we know what was asked! Take note, just about anyone in a media event.
Yes - and he keeps control over it all very well too - the media just raise their hands if they have a question instead of all yelling and screaming.

It's a freight operation, so I expect that their schedules aren't quite as tight as passenger ops. And I can't imagine any short term maintenance work that could cause an engine to depart.
Did the wing fire occur before engine separation or after?
I think it's a fair assumption to say that it happened as a result of the separation. It's unlikely to be a clean event.

As for youtubers, I think Mentour is the best. Juan isn't bad. And Cap'n Steve is pretty terrible.

Its sounding like the aircraft that was originally scheduled went U/S due to a fuel leak and the reported two hour delay was while they offloaded the cargo and reloaded it onto the replacement aircraft.

They've found the pylon of the No.1 engine now also beside the runway (but separated from the engine). I've seen some pretty clear up close photos of the engine but I couldn't see anything that indicated to me that a catastrophic uncontained failure had occurred before the engine/pylon separated from the aircraft and presumably tumbled a few times before coming to a stop. It didn't really look like a major fire had occurred in the engine either.

And Cap'n Steve is pretty terrible.
Nailed it.
