The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Double checking for a mate: for the QF3 SYD-AKL-JFK and QF4 JFK-AKL-SYD services, just wanted to confirm all passengers are still required to leave the plane at AKL and clear transit security before the second leg (a la QF1 and QF2 via SIN)?

I've just booked QF SYD-MEL-HKG-SYD in Y for family off 4, all on cash, but under 2 separate bookings: 1 for myself, 3 for my family members. All our QFF numbers are registered. The only reason I booked over 2 separate bookings is that there were 3 cheaper bracket seats available, so my ticket is more expensive.

Is it possible to do QF Points Upgrade request from my account for the other booking? I have plenty of QF points for upgrade request, but they don't.

We also have selected Y seats QFF online. Is it possible to then change the FF number to say BA/QR/CX, and we get to keep the seats allocated? Or we lose them immediately?

Finally, if we request upgrade on SYD-MEL to J, and it is cleared, can we access both SYD J Dom and MEL J Int lounge, if MEL-HKG leg is not cleared?

Yes - you can request upgrades on behalf of eligible family members via your account with their booking reference and surname. Use this link to go straight to the relevant page: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/my-account/upgrade-family-member

I think you'll find it's not possible to change the FF number from one program to another once you have one in there, but were it possible (perhaps via the call centre) the seats are unlikely to be impacted once chosen, unless for operational reasons.
Finally, if we request upgrade on SYD-MEL to J, and it is cleared, can we access both SYD J Dom and MEL J Int lounge, if MEL-HKG leg is not cleared?
No - there's no DOM arrivals access on a J ticket, and you're not eligible for access with the MEL-HKG flight based on the domestic flight in J. This said, if MEL-HKG should clear and SYD-MEL doesn't, then you should still be able to access the lounge in SYD under oneworld's rules: https://www.oneworld.com/airport-lounges#lounge-access-policy

Cheers,
Matt.

I don’t have much experience with Classic Rewards and I haven’t been able to find a clear answer online! Is it possible to book a mix of CR and paid flights on one PNR? Or can you book a CR flight and
tack on additional paid connecting segments later? Online or does it require a phone call? Thanks!

You can do return bookings online CR oneway and paid the other or v.v. Unfortunately not all regions allow this in all classes.

The multi-city search doesn’t mix and match.

I'm looking at MEL<>PER vv almost a year away, for a milestone birthday for a family member. I'm being offered results in J, on A330 equipment, often for both a ~6am departure and an ~8pm departure from MEL. (I'm using AA miles because the pricing is good and I have plenty, but would consider moving to QF or CX miles if need be.)

I wouldn't spend the miles on a B737 for a four-hour flight but would do so for the widebody with the flat-bed seats. How likely is the A330 to stick? Is it more reliable on (say) the last westbound flight of the day (because it then does a redeye return), or on the first of the day because there are less likely to be accumulated delays?

(I would aso consider connecting in SYD to go transcon on one of the B787s that continue to Europe, but none are offered as awards in my searches.)

correct. Security took us about 30 mins to clear.
