This is not necessarily a “trip” report but more a recording of our proposed overindulgences! We were last in Adelaide about 8 years ago and thought it was time for another visit. We are staying 9 nights and have booked the following:-
  • Lunch at Star of Greece in Port Willunga (Friday 17th)
  • Cheese Fest (Saturday 18th)
  • McLaren Vale winery tour (Sunday 19th)
  • Kangaroo Island tour (Tuesday 21st)
  • Barossa Valley winery tour (Thursday 23rd)
The rest of the time will be spent just wandering and seeing the sites of Adelaide.

Our journey begins on Thursday 16th on JQ807 from MCY to ADL. A fairly uneventful flight until approaching ADL. There was a bit of storm activity but nothing too bad,. However as we began the final approach the pilot suddenly accelerated and initiated a go around. Our initial thoughts were that this was to do with the weather but it turns out there was an aircraft taking off and ATC decided we were too close so had to abort! This then put us third in line so we landed about 15 minutes late.

The delay in landing and our bags being amongst the last ones on the carousel meant we didn’t get to our room until a bit after 7:00 pm. We are staying at the Oaks Embassy for the 9 nights which we booked through bookings.com. This was a private booking and not through the Oaks. On arrival we were met by a friend of the host who showed us to our room. The room faces west so we were treated to an Adelaide sunset.

We were given a brief rundown on Adelaide and things to see and do. As it was getting a bit late he recommended we eat at nearby Italian restaurant which has only recently opened and coincidentally is owned by the host of our unit. Apparently he also owns other units in the complex.

We decided to take a chance and eat there, but were a bit worried as we were the only diners. Our worries were unfounded as the spicy salami pizza we ordered was absolutely amazing with one of the best bases I’ve had. We were also treated to a complimentary bowl of Minestrone which was outstanding. The restaurant is called Angela’s Kitchen and Bar and worth a visit if you’re in the area.

As suggested in the title this trip is about indulging the gourmet delights that SA has to offer, so the trip really is more “vulture than culture” .

The first day (Friday) started with a trip to the Central Markets and breakfast. I’m a sucker for a pastry and particularly love a Pastel de Nata so when we saw this place we just had to stop. It was as good as any I’ve had and coffee was good as well. Didn’t take a photo but I’m guessing you all know what one looks like 😁.

Next on the agenda was lunch at Star of Greece in Port Wilunga. My brother had been there a few years ago and highly recommended it. We were late in making a booking and could only get a 2:30 sitting, but decided to venture out earlier to have a look around. We caught the train from Adelaide to Seaford and then a bus to Port Wilunga. There’s not a lot there but it is so scenic.

We were told the restaurant is named after a shipped that got wrecked there as it’s not actually a Greek restaurant. The restaurant also has a cafe and deck where you can get food and drink and dine casually. As we were early we indulged in a glass of champagne while waiting for our table.

Thanks @VPS . If I had of planned better I should have organised a catch up with Adelaide AFF’ers (how do you actually say that 🤷‍♂️) . I did meet some at the Brisbane gathering last year. .
Next time. I’m in Hobart right now
