Major SYD expansion

Sydney (SYD) is planning for a major expansion, which will see T2 and T3 linked together, allowing international service from the combined terminal.

It will also include driverless buses between T1 and T2/3, and 2 new gates at T1.

This might help a little, but not enough. I don't understand why the neighbouring Kogarah Golf Course cannot be demolished, and give way for another pier for more international flights to park?

Moreover, why waste money on driverless buses when simply scrapping public transport fares in NSW will allow a free, frequent train transfer between T1 and T2/3?

It seems there's too much to promise, but nothing to deliver the problem where passengers are strapped up in seat and sash belt in an upright position for 30 minutes to wait for an international gate, and stress to rush through immigration to check in their bags and cram onto a bus for the next domestic service.

Anyone know where the link is to the daft Master Plan? I can only see the old version.

Anyway, connecting T2/T3 is long overdue but I’m surprised that they can squeeze in 12 more gates (including several swing gates for mixed Int / Dom ops).

Also surprised they’re only looking at 2 additional gates at T1. I’m assuming that’s repurposing some dedicated freight space which is moving to WSI.

Don't think it's a net 12 gates - seems to incorporate the round part of T3.

I'm presuming this might more become a narrowbody international terminal - so focussed on NZ and Pacific. (Kind of replicating earlier calls to get rid of immigration to/ from NZ altogether)

Two new international gates will not solve all the issues with overcrowding in the morning.

Surely they should look to move freight across to where the Blue Emu car park is an extended the international terminal past gate 8 to where freight currently is.

I suppose this means any hope of a refurb to QF pub and J lounge in T3 is off the cards for several more years.

The airport’s masterplan forecasts growth of 123 per cent in international passenger numbers, which will see overseas movements overtake domestic travellers by 2045.

To help meet the demand, a new precinct linking the T2 and T3 terminals will be created providing up to 12 international gates alongside existing domestic gates.

Another two gates will be added to the T1 international terminal as the airport prepares to handle 36.4 million overseas arrivals and departures by 2045, and 36.2 million domestic passengers.

Can you imagine the currently congested SYD with 123% pax growth?! It'll remain a congested airport with silly split int'l and (now, mainly) domestic.

This image was in the Oz. Can you imagine the traffic on the elevated access road, now servicing 3 terminals? Somewhere in the purple bit will be int'l check in, border force coming and going, customs, their offices, lounges, duty free etc.

I recall seeing a plan probably a decade ago that had intentions to join the terminals or something.

The airport has done nothing in a long time, this T2 current upgrade is about a decade too late.

Shortly before COVID, articles appeared tegarding a plan to make T2 & T3 a combined terminal. There was some oneworld conjecture around this but nothing specific.

It’s the revised master plan out for consultation. Some of it will probably see the light of day.

A whole new pier at T2 (not shown in the earlier graphics), is the main driver for 12 new gates (looks like about 10 plus 2 or 3 by joining T2/3).

But as per my edited comment, the artist impressions are missing a whole new pier proposed for T2 (and looks like extra gates at T3 - besides those between T2/T3).

Unclear how many will be “swing gates” capable of supplementing T1.

Interesting they expect passenger numbers to grow to what Shanghai or LAX is today.

All seems a bit overly ambitious for a city of a 5/6 million that will probably only grow by not even 2 million by 2045.

Taking into account some cannibalisation from WSI, I’d say passengers numbers will probably be somewhat flat for the coming decades.

Then again, talking about stupidly sourced data, the government report said WSI would be bigger than Mascot down the track, also with some stupidly high passenger ambition.

It’s still the main gateway for the country that will grow much more than 2 million in that time. SYD has a lot of domestic connections.

If anything it will ensure Dash 8s are parked remotely, the “new gates” look to replace the current basement Dash 8 gates from what I can see.
