What are your air travel micro-hacks?

On a quick return trip to Britain and Netherlands with SQ, this year even with loosened laces on my shoes my feet and lower leg circulation caused me a lot of discomfort.

Coming back I used my very comfy’ Crosby slippers. Soft fabric uppers and rubber soles (easily cleaned). No problems. Slip them on before boarding. So my hack is a comfy’ pair of slippers.

I could walk normally in them as I find thongs or hotel slip ons without heels not as easy. Not that it matters so much in the confines of an aircraft.

As mentioned above am not worried about aircraft lavatory/toilet floors which are probably cleaned more frequently than so many areas both outdoors and indoors that we take for granted.

I have found that not trying to bring a machete onboard, and then not trying to use the plastic butter-knives to hack off the feet of the people putting them on the bulkheads, has resulted in a lot of not-confrontational air travel.

Leave that for the airline-branded machetes that the flight crew carry.

Not sure if this counts : Before getting to security screening, I empty the contents of my pockets into my hand luggage.

I avoid the extra step of dumping all my stuff into a tray (and holding up people behind me).

I also only have to keep my eye on one thing (my HL) rather than two (my HL and the tray).

Said contents are easily retrieved while in the lounge.
👍 I do this too.

Have an inflatable neck pillow in my carry-on toiletry bag, for a much more comfortable Y sleep without having to worry about remembering to bring / buy / carry around a stuffed one.

I also have a pair of comfy hotel slippers stashed in a side pocket for wearing in-flight (if a pair is not provided), and I always change into pajamas/comfy loungewear once onboard (long-haul only). Also keep spare top and undergarments in the backpack to freshen up the outfit on arrival.

Also, everything that needs to come out at security sits in one pocket in the backpack, organised into cases/bags. Swing the backpack off the shoulder, open zip with one hand, and take out tablet/laptop, chargers (looking at you, Scandinavia), and assorted terrorist liquids in one go, then dump the bag in the tray and send it through the scanner. Can usually do it in the same move as when I shove the pocket contents inside.

Ditto - this is exactly what I do too. Chuck wallet, phone, etc into the bag, zip it up, and fly through security whilst half the population of Australia is fart-arsing about in the queue.

Although I could barely conceal my irritation a while back when some rent-a-cop at Sydney Domestic took the bloody things out past the x-ray, and then put them in a tray and rescanned them because they suspected some terroristy terrorism stashed in my wallet.

This is all very Eco-focused and I always thought one of the main reasons to be on this website was to avoid these lower ends as much as possible (has worked brilliantly for me tbh!).

So… I expect throw away slippers to be handed out, otherwise I’ll change airlines :p Any advice for the ones not flying in cattle class?

So what’s the butter micro-hack? I just put it on top of the hot meal and it melts pretty quick.

The real question should be: how do you melt the tubs of ice cream that seem to be served at ‘Permian ice core’ hardness? No hot meal left by then to assist with the melting.

My micro-hack:

Please show me a pair of one use slipons provided by airlines that fit 13(4E) feet 🤷‍♂️

Muesli bars.

My carryon and luggage always has a few muesli bars. Never know when the hunger pains are going to grip when in Y or on a bus tour or on a train somewhere and lunch or dinner is at least an hour away. (Or you don't want to pay and exorbitant price for lunch at a stop along the way)

For economy travel…

Scholl flight socks, mild compression socks that are comfortable (not as fierce as ‘medical grade’) and greatly ease soreness or swelling in your feet.

When sitting at a bulkhead, use a full-sized rolla-board as a leg rest. It sits flush with the seat pan and keeps your legs fully horizontal.

If you don’t have status, use on-line check-in so you can take advantage of the ‘bag drop’ line at the airport… it’s often empty.

Snaffle an air sickness bag or two… they’re handy when you’re out on the road, or travelling by car to hold messy or wet rubbish like apple cores, banana skins etc. The also make good bags for shoes that might have got dirty while travelling.

That's a thought - will shoes fit?

Have that belt or a very similar one - BNE staff made me take it off anyway a month or so ago.

Belts need to come off for the body scanner machines. In the old days when it was a simple metal detector machine, a plastic belt buckle was useful.
