Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Sunday 3 August's MEL to LAX QF93 was the timetabled 0945 hours with class leader B789 VH-ZNA. It didn't take off until 1847 this evening, with arrival at gate to be about 1552 hours, 532 minutes late. This shouldn't delay QF94 back to MEL as the aircraft will still have quite a few hours in LAX.
 
On Monday 4 August, QF127 (A332 VH-EBN), the 1020 hours SYD up to HKG has had projected pushback delayed to 1330 hours. The aircraft has been in Sydney since early this morning.

A388 VH-OQD is on QF81, the identically timed 1020 hours departure but to SIN. It was in the sky at 1154 so should arrive at gate at about 1753, 63 minutes tardy.

B789 VH-ZND is on QF7, the 1025 hours SYD-DFW airborne at 1145 hours. Arrival should be at 1134, 49 late.

On Tuesday 5 August, QF7 is cancelled. This may be because Saturday 3 August's QF7 (operated by -ZNK) diverted to IAH and still appears to be there. IAH is only 195 nautical miles from DFW. The latter airport (DFW) may have been closed due to a summer storm if my quick research is correct.

QF51, the 1105 hours late morning BNE up to SIN has A332 VH-EBC with estimated pushback at 1225, 80 late. This plane arrived in BNE this morning (as QF54 ex SIN) at 1025 hours, 100 minutes late., its fourth consecutive unpunctual flight (QF97/98 BNE-MNL and return, and QF53 BNE-SIN being tyhe others).

A B789 is to run QF93, the 0945 hours MEL to LAX but has been altered to shortly (supposedly) push back at 1215 hours, 150 minutes late. FR24 has the aircraft as VH-ZNA but that may be incorrect as the records suggest that 789 is in Los Angeles.

QF93 has four engines, VH-OQH

Adding to Monday 4 August 2025, QF37, the second MEL-SIN for the day is the scheduled 1555 hours mid afternoon flight. It has A332 VH-EBG but has been delayed to an expected pushback time of 2230 late tonight.

One feels for the passengers booked on whatever flight ex SIN this aircraft operates, as the stated likely delay is in the 'grey area' where it's unlikely to be long enough to have a comfortable sleep even if QFi booked patrons in an hotel. If passengers have to spend much of the night waiting at Changi, while it's a great airport the multi-hour delay is hard on families travelling with young children and babies, as well as the elderly and anyone else with reduced mobility.

So why did it get half way the distance between BNE and SYD before turning back? This is not the first time QF12 has been diverted to BNE!

The fog in Sydney has delayed many flights.

As a micro example, B738 VH-VXJ has had an eventful couple of days.

Yesterday (Monday 4 August) it operated QF943, the evening 2025 hours BNE to PER airborne at 2146. However it diverted to MEL: I'm unsure what happened to passengers. It then today ran the 0720 hours MEL-SYD QF412 that wasn't in the sky until 0946 hours, arriving SYD at 1042 hours, 117 minutes late. Its next flight is QF922, the 0945 hours SYD up to CNS that's expected to push back at 1120 late this morning. Expect a greater delay due to congestion with arrivals as always taking precedence.

QF's new 'baby' A321 VH-OGA is operating empty ('ferry flight') as QF6104 from MEL to SYD, an 0940 hours timetabled departure that took off at 1009 hours. Arrival at gate (assuming it's going to a gate: perhaps to a hanger?) is forecast for about 1127 hours.

Yes, it seems that only QF12 diverted (not looking at domestic flights, but all the other main international arrivals this morning appeared to just circle for a short while before landing. QF2 barely waited at all and almost went straight in. Would have expected the fog to be heavier at 5am than 7am when it would start to lift and when the others landed.

That reminds me, must check the weather next week!
 
Fog at SYD begs the question on what it will be like at WSI? Tomorrow's forecast shows possible fog in the west.

Sydney is not Canberra, but my experience is that in the latter, the fog tends to be benign at say 0600 or 0630, allowing first flights of the day to exit stage left, but by 0800 and until about 1000 to 1100, fog is heavy.
 
Continuing with Tuesday 5 August 2025, QF81, the 1020 hours SYD-SIN is being operated by A388 VH_OQD for the second consecutive day. It was in the sky at 1231 with arrival predicted for 1840 tonight local SIN time, 110 minutes late.

QF19 (the lunchtime 1225 hours SYD up to MNL) has A333 VH-QPC. It took off at 1338 so gate arrival should be at about 1938 hours, 48 late.

B789 VH-ZNN is operating QF27, the long haul SYD-SCL. It was airborne at 1233 hours so arrival is likely at 1041 hours, 36 late.

Sister aircraft -ZNE is in Melbourne to provide traction for QF21, the 1505 hours MEL up and across to DFW in the USA, altered to hopefully depart an hour late.

A332 VH-EBS is on QF35, the 1205 hours MEL-SIN in the sky at 1438, so delayed arrival becomes around 2033 hours, 138 minutes tardy.

-EBB has the task of QF71 from PER to SIN, expected to arrive half an hour late at 1830 hours tonight.
