If you feel like scratching your head a bit, have a look at the FR24 trace for AA3023. They've ended up with an abort, and evacuation (and everyone has their luggage, as usual) but that's almost the most normal part of the trace.
Looks like the pilot left his cigarette lighter behind and went back to pick it up /s

With all the manoeuvring and associated braking would that have a significant impact on brake temperatures?
It’s possible, but with a bit of care, it shouldn’t.

Looking at the pictures, it actually seems to be sitting on the left engine. And how often now have we seen people standing on the wing, in this case, more or less over the fire, and no slide available to them. But, they have their cabin luggage!

Interesting read about limitations at Kathmandu Airport: Open-air jet repair exposes Kathmandu airport’s limitations
Not really uncommon. It would be rare for a 330 sized hangar to be sitting around. If it's there, it will already be in use.
I guess the other question is, what might have happened to the engine and why did CX have an engineer onboard on a A330 - was that by chance or due to the route they were flying.
If the place they're going to doesn't have an engineer they've certified to oversee any work, they'll need to carry someone who can. Not uncommon.

As for the engine, who knows. Presumably internal given the need to change it.
