I went the beef which while not amazing, was acceptable. Certainly nothing to get excited about though.

It seems it's just one of those microwave ready meals, which it obviously is, but really?

No microwaves onboard just ovens that reheat snap frozen food - same as all airlines.

Conceptually, I don’t mind the dish. A bit more sauce would be better. But the chances of getting the meat thawed and reheated before it loses it’s pink is often problematic….

Maybe its time Neil Perry took a more active role in Qantas premium catering - his name is splashed over QF menus ( not just his famous "green grass" salads ) and some meals are just diabolically bad . Does he not realise that his name is mud for so many frequent fliers.

The Chaser team - if you are reading this, I would pay an unreasonable amount of money to attend charity dinner with Neil Perry where unbeknownst to him, the menu served to all guests is QF dom J catering. Make it happen.

Quiche was quite crispy and very flavourful.


And although not J, here is the PE lunch service on QF3 SYD-AKL 7/7. Minor downgrades compared to J (sparkling wine instead of champagne, no Pepe Saya, etc), but the format is basically the same as domestic/trans-Tasman J, including PDB. For 10k less points I think it's a pretty good way to cross the Tasman if the timings work as it felt like a business lite (or are the usual trans-Tasman services PE masquerading as J?)

That's the mystery. Neil Perry cuisine on Qantas is a standing joke. He must be getting a very fat retainer for the use of his name; I hope for his reputation's sake he doesn't actually have any input into the meal creation.

I thought, if I remember correctly, Tommy was one of the bar staff in the Singapore lounge. There was some sort of feature done on him.

Folks love to rave about SQ’s catering and how *amazing* that is… but you’ll be lucky to get a single entree - no choice - which invariably contains fish or seafood. Bad luck if you don’t eat seafood.

Qantas at least provides a choice of entrees so I don’t miss out.

As someone who doesn’t eat seafood I agree.
I do think the SQ catering is highly overrated and my last few experiences have been pretty underwhelming

SQ at least has a decent selection of special meals and BTC.
On QF special meals are not guaranteed to be loaded even when flying F

Sweet corn fritter with smoked salmon on this morning’s QF 428 MEL - SYD. Tasted ok but portion could have been more generous. Enjoyed the 787 — everyone had a lot of space to stretch out

Totally agree. Most of my Singaporean friends are moaning constantly about how their once treasured flag carrier nowadays mostly lives from good reputation from decades ago. People had a VERY different view of “their” airline, say 20 years ago which is a real shame.

And the seafood thing is my bug bear as I can’t eat anything beyond smoked salmon and maybe a well cooked fish and chips. Having spent half my childhood in Singapore, I truly know how one suffers there with such an intolerance. Same with Japanese carriers- people love showing those images of (admittedly beautiful looking) boxes but if you don’t eat seafood, then it’s dry beef steak for you.

Flying on JAL is poor suffering for me, as an example: Not only are their coffin seats (I’m talking 777 in J!) way too tight for me, the entire cabin tends to be overheated and stinks like a fish market to me which really is the wirst possible in my mind. The crew can be as lovely as they maybe- it will never be a pleasant experience for me.

In my last TR, SQ from SIN to MEL, I described the Kway Teow Kua Kai as just 'OK'. Perhaps you have the same 'problem' as me; too many QR meals!

I’m not sure that’s the case as out of ADL we tend to alternate between MH and SQ dependant on award availability and I reckon that on nearly every MH flight the catering has been better than SQ to the point I actually prefer the overall MH product.
Even on the recent trip my meals on both MS and LH were far superior to SQ’s offerings. MS cops a lot of stick but can’t fault the whole experience on my last flight, they were superb
