What cheeses me off

Following up for MstrQS2 first rear end.

Minor ding but Car deemed uneconomic to repair so NRMA writes it off

The car is still drivable and Mr QS was driving it when NRMA rings up with the news the car is written off
The problem is when the insurer writes it off, they notify the RMS who promptly cancels the Rego.
So MstrQS2 goes from driving a registered car down the motorway one second and in the nexrt second it's unregistered.

I then rang MstrQS2 to tell him the needs to urgently pull over. Now he is late for work.So now a frantic search for a suitable spot to pull over on the M2 motorway

I then complained to NRMA that they need to give us notice because someone could be driving the car when the rego gets cancelled.

This is not WCMO its WPMO:mad:
Seems odd?

According to the official NSW government website, you are to be notified in writing of a registration cancellation for a written-off vehicle and have 14 days to take the plates into a NSW service centre to complete the rego cancellation.

Seems like there is at least 14 days warning, plus time for the written notification to reach you?

Reality is completely different
Get a phone call from insurer
Car written off
Rego cancelled same phone call
Tow truck came a few days later and take car including number plate.

But now you mentioned it. I went to check the rego. IT IS STILL REGISTERED. 😡🤬

I'm going to complain some more
The whole ‘urgently need to pull over thing’ seemed a bit dramatic! I couldn’t understand how that was possible, and it seems the insurer was a bit hasty in their advice/notification to you. I’m not sure a rego or licence can simply be cancelled over the phone or without something in writing. The legal implications for other road users and pedestrians would be too great.

According to the insurer agent, the whole process is electronic. Once it is entered electronically into the register the rego is cancelled. But thanks to you, it appears the whole process is not as immediate as it was made out to be.

I'll make another trip to Service NSW to speak with them in person to confirm the process.

I'm in a lovely quiet part of Cornwall and the holiday house next door has had very quiet tenants until now. Today the new tenants have a child that is banging his ball against the wall and a crying baby - SIGH
Sounds like our new (about 18nonth) neighbours, who have 2 of the angriest, loudest, most obnoxious children ever born who fight and scream and swear in their yard every day starting from 0700. Then add in an extremely big outside dog (pit bull labrador cross - who does that 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️)that barks half the night. I love dogs. But not every 10-15 mins through the night outside my bedroom. That cheeses me off.

What cheeses me off even more is that when I complained to ACT animal control they declined to do anything because we are the only neighbours affected. Of course we are - the blocks in our suburb are large and the dog’s kennel would be at least 20 metres to any other neighbour. It is less than 3 metres from my bedroom window. All they could suggest was talking to the neighbour (done that multiple times) or non-binding mediation. Arghhhh

So we bought one of those devices from the internet that allegedly emits sound waves only dogs can hear - could it possibly be a scam????? But no it’s not a scam and it works a treat to send the dog away from our room and towards other neighbours. Who are now complaining about the dog. 12 months too late. I am cheeses off.

I'm another who thought it odd and didn't know that an insurance company can cancel your rego, especially considering insurance over and above MAI/CTP collected as part of vehicle registration, is not mandatory. But most concerning is that if an insurance company cancels your rego, then your MAI/CTP insurance would also be cancelled.

Seems like a pretty big over-reach and it doesn't seem legit as may have transpired.

Could you share any details about the device? I have a similar problem and am interested in this as a possible solution.

Here you go @zig. It definitely works for our nuisance neighbour-dog. In fact, when it is freshly charged, the dog will sometimes audibly whimper (yes, it is that close to our house that we can hear it) if it comes within range. I feel sorry for the dog, but.....

We were quite sceptical buying a device "that only dogs can hear" from the internet, but also very desperate as it was ruining our sleep, so decided to give this a go after Mr Seat 0A did as much due diligence as he could. It is charged by USB, and the charge lasts about 7-10 days, less when it is bone chilling in Canberra.

From memory it was about $80? Anyway, it has definitely made a difference for us. Might be worth a try. Good luck.

Thanks for the details @Seat0B. I will check it out.

didn't know that an insurance company can cancel your rego
they dont but they electronically notify the Rego authority (RMS in NSW) who then cancel the rego. I still have not managed to go to the RMS tho check the correct procedure and whether its instant cancellation or if there is a grace period as implied in the screenshot by Meltraveller.

As of today it is still registered. I will check daily.

A panel beater once told me especially with hail damage but also other damage to drop by a mechanic or panel shop and get them to give it a quick once over “off the record”. They may be able to tell if it will be written off unnecessarily. If you want to keep the car you then have the option to get it fixed independently.

The legal implications for other road users and pedestrians would be too great.

Further information:

Sources : NRMA and Service NSW

Both confirm the following:
A written off car is still registered until the owner of the car takes a settlement letter indicating the status of the car from the insurer to the Registration Authority and third party insurer. The insurer only provides the settlement letter when they have taken possession of the vehicle. The date of "write off" and the date of rego cancellation is the date of the letter. Any unused rego/third party insurance is calculated from the date of the settlement letter.

So the car is still drivable when deemed a write off and does not need to left on the side of the road. It can be driven home and left there. Obviously it is not a good idea to drive the car that is written off but before getting the settlement letter - you don't want another accident for example.

#WCMO but thanks @MEL_Traveller for the insight.

Complaint sent into NRMA asking them to provide training to their agents to provide correct information to their customers.

Hi John,

Thanks for your application (AppID T-xx_xx_) for 1/22 Looking Street, Toowong.

Unfortunately, your rental application has not been successful.

We wanted to let you know promptly to avoid any unnecessary delay in your search for a suitable property.

We wish you all the best in your search for a suitable property.

Why is it a secret why we were unsuccessful? Not good enough? Owner chose someone else? This Real Estate is very popular around here but they are truly awful.

Why is this industry so arrogant? Absolutely zero humanity.

WCMO are hotels that have installed washing machines that dispense their own washing powder. A new trend in some hotels I have stayed recently. I like to use my own as their powders are too strongly perfumed. 🤢
Or places that advertise having one... then you get there and it's a twin tub... and it's very manual to use AND barely refreshes your clothes, so you end up hand washing and weeks worth of clothes.

So final update

Service NSW ONLY cancels the registration on the day I present the insurance settlement letter in person to Service NSW. Service NSW then backdates the rego cancellation to date of incident and any unexpired rego is calculated from that date. Once that is done, Service NSW provides me with a letter confirming rego cancellation so I can claim unexpired CTP from the date of the cancellation letter

So let's say:
Incident happened on 01 Jan 2025
Insurance deems it uneconomic to repair after assessment on 14 Jan 2025
I get phone call on 14 Jan 2025 to say car written off and is now on register of written off vehicles
The car is still drivable as it is still registered
I could still have driven the car until I get the settlement letter by email on 20 Jan 1025
I then take the letter to Service NSW on 21 Jan 2025
Rego cancelled on 20 Jan 2025
But they backdate the rego cancellation to date of incident to calculate the unexpired rego refund
The date used for calculating unexpired CTP is the date of cancellation 20 Jan2025

No out of pocket costs but inconvenience of having to stop on side of road then coming back later with borrowed car trailer to pick it up. I could have left it there and got the insurer to pick it up but there were a lot of personal stuff in the car and I didn't want some one to come along and steal it, burn it which would have reduced the value to the insurer when they take possession of it - and increased my subsequent premiums future.
