Interline agreements don't tend to be promoted.

If you buy the ticket on a single ticket the bag will be checked through.

An example is Delta. When you search from Adelaide to LAX you will get various options for the domestic booking : Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas and all will show with the operating airline code. These are all interline.

So if you are on the HongKong Airlines website and it shows Virgin Australia and a VA flight number for the domestic flight it's interline and your baggage will be checked through.

Some comparison sites slightly break this theory as they will provide separate tickets and you have to collect your bags and check in etc. Though they normally display a tag of this. Therefore it's much safer when you book directly with the airline as they will only sell code-share / interline tickets.

thanks so much for your answer

You can always use a travel agent to put multiple tickets on a single PNR, that will see your bags checked through in most cases as long as an IL agreement exists.

As above separate PNRs are a problem but usually separate tickets on a single PNR will work.

As a general note, it's worth highlighting that interline involves more than one agreement. There's eticket interline, paper ticket interline, and baggage interline. Just because there's an eticket interline doesn't necessarily mean there is a baggage interline, and vice versa. It's quite commonly the case, but not universal. Within that, some agreements can also be one-way, rather than reciprocal.

In this case though, VA and HX (Hong Kong Airlines) have reciprocal agreements on all three, so you'll be fine. 😁

Keeping in mind interlines can also be either bi-lateral or uni-lateral. For example, Some international carriers (who are not partners with VA) may accept interlines from those connecting from VA, but may not interline the other way, e.g will only tag to the first Australian port (which is moot anyway as all international-domestic connections in Australia are required to collect their bags and clear immigration regardless).

Friend has just rocked up at MEL with a single ticket, VA connecting to TK. MEL says they can’t check bags from VA to TK.

I too am interested to know what IL agreements exist!

TK chose QF for IL, not VA. Though it seems they have a basic IL agreement (I think not through check?)

Thanks!

Is that the VA or TK list? If it’s the VA list is says they can through check bags to TK?

The main issue is that my friend now has to collect bags in Sydney and take them over to international. And timing is quite tight!

"may check/interline baggage" (on a Paper Ticket) will be on the first airline's discretion, IIRC (focusing on the word 'may').

E-Ticket interlines, assuming that's the VA list, would be the only guaranteed baggage interlines going outbound iirc.

It’s the VA list. Normally the ILs are in the top section so I don’t know the full definition for the bottom list.

I would assume you would have to check yourself in and VA could theoretically tag your bag but not issue a boarding pass. Or as it happens just say “no, we can’t do that”.

That’s what I thought too!

But VA in two places is saying they will only through check bags to partner airlines… and air mauritius.

So only the regular Air canada, united, singapore airlines and the couple of others they partner with for FF benefits.

They’re saying everyone else they won’t do.

Shame.

VA also has a unilateral codeshare and interline with AI, thus a booked BNE-SYD-DEL flight (the VA leg on a AI codeshare) should be checked through.

AS is a weird one, and probably a relic of VA longhaul.

There is no overlap of VA and AS services, and I guess in time they’ll stop ILing with HA. I’m not sure how up to date that list is.

The list also lists VX which is long defunct. A relic from the V Australia days.
