Just wondering about people's thoughts on the wisdom of travel insurance when travelling to NZ given that we have reciprocal medical arrangements between the countries.

Any experiences?

It's really up to you to consider the cost/benefit.

How much more would it cost you if someting happened in NZ when compared to the cost of the same thing happening in Oz?

We visited in Sept 2009 & didn't even consider the reciprocal medical, just knew we had our annual policy in place. RACV & others give the option of selecting the sections you want

Back in the day when I did not have an annual, I always took out travel insurance just for medical in case something happened before the flight, or loss of luggage, or something yadada with the rental car.

If you are renting a car, or have bought a package, I would def consider it. Saying that, I will always have travel insurance, regardless of recip.... it even paid to have it on a domestic trip in Australia! Paid for additional costs incurred because of a medical problem, to return home.

Edit: The cost for insurance to NZ is nothing anyway , compared to "North America".... How long are you going for albatross710?

Thanks for the feedback peoples. The trip is for 4 people, 11 days.

I checked the price on TravelInsuranceDirect $114. A lot less than I had been thinking.

I did purchase the tickets on Westpac KF Plat card meaning I do have some coverage at the moment. I'll have to track down the T&Cs - again.

So a better question: is there a benefit in having a specific travel insurance policy on a 11 day NZ trip if I already have credit card insurance and reciprocal medical arrangements.

Carefully check the PDS's of each to see what is provided and how they may individually cover your needs.

e.g. Are you considering hiring a car? One policy may provide better cover than the other.

One thing though, if you do take out an additional policy and you end up needing to make a claim, do avoid reference to the other policy (which may also cover the event) when doing so - this can only cause confusion and perhaps angst.

Thanks - good tip.

I needed dental work in NZ a few years ago which made the travel insurance very worth while. I even made a few $$ on the exchange rates.
