Hi, just saw a great aerial shot of the extensions to the Melbourne airport and it looks just about finished bar for six or so airbridges and they are parked over near the private jets. This will be a tremendous improvement to MEL and will save being parked and bused in third world style. Anyone had a look inside yet, any lounges being moved or are privy to it's opening?, regards bkkrop

The new set-up should be good.

Interestingly we have never had the bus experience in MEL but seem to catch it in SYD and LAX often enough :!:

I have once on an EK arrival, but only at the height of the upgrading/extension works that curtailed gate space. Last time I flew into MEL I am sure we arrived at the closest gate on the new extension, but as we went straight through the arrival corridors to it was hard to tell.

Is the new terminal going to be domestic or international?

If International, does that mean Qantas are going to have to set up a whole new F Lounge? The current one isn't that old..!

Cheers,

To wrongly paraphrase Mariah Carey:

"All I want for Christmas, is T2."

Ok, the corniness aside, any extension/improvement to MEL Airport can only be good in that it helps increase competition with SYD.

If I understand the project correctly, it's pretty much just an extension to the current T2 Intl terminal to allow for more jets to arrive. So, the current T2 and lounges etc won't be affected.

The build appears to be physically complete - including most air bridges etc. I guess it's the fit out that would be underway.

More like to allow for more retail space... For the cost and space being added, there is not actually a lot of extra gates. The plans were criticised extensively in The Age about this.

Yup, $330 million for 5 new aerobridges. Seems like they haven't left much space for any future upgrades though.

I'm flying thru there on Saturday morning. If nobody posts a shot before then, and the weather is smiling with a seat on the right side of the can as we taxi, I'll try and bang off a panorama which should be uploaded just after making tarmac in Hobart. Would be nice to see how things have gone since last there in Mid-March.

On Friday morning there was a SQ A380 attached to one of the new gates. Don't know if this means its now operational or if it was just testing...

Actually arrived at one of the new gates on 19 Nov, on EK flight from SIN.
