International transit at Shanghai PVG

Have heard BA-CX on 1 ticket was required to collect luggage, clear immigration and re-check at Shanghai.

But on MU-MU international I assume this shouldn't be required? Some Reddit comments say MU-MU is fine but would like a more concrete understanding of the process.

MU to MU is indeed fine. You will need to do some stuff for transit as with most airports. Just be aware that PVG airside security can be a bit more picky than other countries. (Umbrellas, jumbled cables may all need to come out of the bag).

Also note the main T1 terminal is kind of barren, but the satellite terminal seems huge with a bit more.

You should be fine for MU-MU (or CA-CA) transit as you'd arrive and depart from their home terminal, and it appears to be airline-dependent, unlike some other international airports.

I recently tried to transit airside NH-CX at PVG T2 but was refused by the staff sitting at the counter. She worked for CA and could only let people through for certain transfers (i.e. CA-CA). The CX transfer staff was not there at the time, and was only there "sometimes", so I had to clear immigration and re-check in the end.
