Mrs Max and I are heading to HK next week. Staying at Marco Polo.

Would love some recomendations for eating. We would like to try the entire range of eating experiences from the food at markets through to fine dining.

Thnx

Some of my faves:
Yung Kee (roast goose, fried rice) --> best followed by a coughtail or 5 at Kee Club upstairs - you need to get your concierge to get you on to the list
Maxim's Palace (dim sum - not the fast food place that shares the same name!)
Ovolounge (contemporary chinese)
Heirinchou (traditional Cantonese)
Pearl on the Peak (contemporary Australian) - ask for a seat near the windows (floor to ceiling!) with nice views of the city skyline
Isola Bar and Grill at the IFC mall (Italian) - v cool waterfront place
1/5 Neuvo (Latino) - the new expat 'in' place
Harlan's (contemporary European) -awesome burger!

The Peninsula in Kowloon serves a v nice high tea (but you need to dress up as it's a rather stuffy kind of place). There's also v nice dim sum at the Langham Mongkok.

The Mongkok district is also good if you want something cheap and cheerful.

Enjoy Honkers! :D

I was actually very surprised at the relative lack of formality at The Peninsula's high tea, given what I'd been told to expect - lots of people dressed relatively casually, they only really turned away people wearing sandals/thongs. Also, plenty of people flouting the 'no photos in the lobby' rule with nary a peep from the waiters.

I'm no regular like QF009, but fwiw we had good meals at the following:

- Yan Toh Heen (Cantonese) @ The Intercontinental - great service.
- Felix (Modern French) @ The Peninsula - apparently great for 'people watching, but also a great view of the city lights).
- Dragon-i (Yum Cha) on Wyndham Street - also turns into a night club.

Excellent, more places to visit when I'm over there for a holiday in 2 weeks. This is turning into a food holiday for us!

A few on my list: (Disclaimer - these are places I haven't tried but will be in a few weeks)

Harbourside Buffet Restaurant - Intercontinental HK: Recommended by a foodie friend who loved the variety.

Yung Keen: Apparently trying their goose is one of the must-do activities in HK

Lung King Heen - Four Seasons: HK's only Michelin 3 star restaurant

Lei Garden - IFC: Dim Sum has had mixed reviews from friends. Some say it's good, others say it's expensive for the quality.

Chuen Kee Seafood Restaurant - Sai Kung: Recommended to me by a seafood lover.

I've got a few more noted down at home so I'll add some more later.

you must visit a place called sushi one. im kicking myself as i can't remember the street but i stayed at the empire hotel and is a block away from here.

they have full half price off everything after 10pm. get in early as the lines are very long. its probably the bes japanese food i've had there and really cheap one you take into account the AUD conversion which i think is now 1 : 6.5HK now. you will not regret it!

Love The Peninsula.

Though never had to dress right up, smart casual usually suffices.

Is that the one at the top? Do they still have the glass urinal where you effectively expose yourself to Hong Kong?

Maybe that's what djfuzz means by "people watching"

Sushi one is in Ashley St and well worth it if you like Sushi. Splash out and have the beef and Uni (see urchin) and Toro (fatty tuna belly).

It's ok, I'd still much rather go to the Langham Place or for somewhere cheaper any of the Jade Garden branches. Just stay away from the Lei Garden branch at Elements - the service there is pretty poor, miserable cows the whole lot of them.

There's also a place that has excellent Peking duck but the name escapes me atm - their branch on the Island has 1 Michelin Star. Will revert when I remember the name.

Yep, designed by Phillip Starck. The views of the city from the glass urinals are great!

They do have a min spend. Last time I was there it was HKD250 but between my partner and I we probably inhale much more than HKD250 worth of stuff within minutes. :p

It used to be a very trendy place. But recently competition has stiffened and it's no longer as cutting edge as it once was. I'd much rather go to Lotus, Kee Club, Dragon-I, the Bed Club or the W's Living Room these days, but would still go back to admire the decor. :)

Also one more thing RE Pearl on the Peak. You want to book early or with the aid of a well-connected concierge so you get a fab seat with fantastic views. Ask for a corner seat at the windows in front of the city skyline. The W has always managed to secure this seat for me except once when we lost out to a fella who was going to propose to his gf that same evening. :D Got the next best seat which was the one immediately next to them. For once I didn't mind - witnessing the incredibly romantic and touching moment was well worth it. :)

Some suggestions

Luk Yu teahouse 24-26 Stanley St, Central
Dim Sum served, 1930's Hong Kong decor
Google for interesting history

Mak's Noodle 77 Wellington Street, Central
- cash only, small bowls of wanton noodles
- said to be very good but I found the wanton noodles at the CX business lounge in HKG better! (apparently this was catered by the Peninsula)
- hmmm, time to book a trip via HKG again to sample the CX lounge offerings

Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant 23-25 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay
- notable for cold crab dish - pricey, looks like ordinary swimmer crab but very delicious..... limited stocks daily

Sorry for all the Chinese suggestions, it is after all Hong Kong! All this thinking has made me hungry again!

There's also another nice noodle place on Wellington St called Wong Chi Kei. It's diagonally opposite Yung Kee. And Xia Mian Guan at Elements Mall.

Yes Chinese food is native to Honkers but the beauty of the city is it's so cosmopolitan and they also do other types of cuisine beautifully there too.

Oh, just remembered, there's lots of really nice tapas places in Soho. No point naming them as the best idea is to walk along and choose a menu. Quite popular with the expats and prepares you well to just head down to Lan Kwai afterwards.

Two excellent recommedations, close to your hotel

India Place
1st Floor
19-21 Hankow Road
TST

Chao Inn
10th Floor
1 Peking Road
TST
(Book in advance and request a window table, so you can catch the laser light show which happends at 8pm)

Took friends to both places this week and they were very impressed with quality of food and price.

Good luck and enjoy

The Japanese Restanurant inside Marco Polo HK Hotel is very good. Lunch set menu is of exception value. If you want to spend a bit more, then have dinner there and order Omakase.

You should also try the buffet at Sheraton or Peninsula.

Yes the buffet at the 3 hotels on top of Pac Place are good but they are similar to most other 5 star hotels in HK.

Sherator has an Oyster Bar and Peninsula is Japanese Buffet.

I forgot to mention that if you really want to indulge yourself and Mrs (and spend USD200 per pax + drinks) , Amigo in Happy Valley is the best French restaurant in town and I still remember my first time there in the 1970s.

Typhoon Signal 8 in Hong Kong tonight, so eating in the hotel seemed a good idea.
