Late September we get into HKG airport at 7:00am and do not depart until 11:30pm. I guess we will be trying to get into one of the lounges on arrival and then possibly head out to the city.

I am thinking of a Star Ferry cruise of Victoria Harbour and another possibilty could be Victoria Peak. Is it worth going over to Macau for a few hours? Any other suggestions?

I need to keep in mind that I have a 71 year old with me and although I am full of energy when I am in holidays we need to avoid too much walking.

Not really sure about enough time for Macau, esp. with your Dad along as you will be doing walking. Perhaps go over (I think it's about a 1 hour ferry ride each way) and visit one of the mega casino's - eg Venetian - they tend to have busses from the ferry terminal. The issue could be with immigration taking a while. I've done day trips (circa 9 hours), so it's possible... just not sure if I'd recommend it.

From Airport, catch the Airport Express to Central (Hong Kong I think) station. Walk out of the station, and visit the Peak. I think it's an ok walk to the tram from the station, or a bus - although havn't done it recently.

Catch a bus down from the peak back to Central, or catch the tram down.

Walk to the Star Ferry, catch it across the harbour. Wander through the harbourfront on the Kowloon side and see the Avenue of Stars.

Perhaps Lantau is also of interest, although I would avoid the cable car. There are busses up to and from the Giant Buddah which can be caught from one of the MTR stations.

You can even catch an airport bus from Lantau area.

Otherwise, one of the Cathay lounges has Cabanas which would allow for some sleep. As long as you have your onward boarding pass, you should have no issues getting back into the secure side of the airport.

We did a 9hr stopover. First problem is what to do with hand luggage. In ground floor you can leave bags for rasonable rate. hen catch train into town.
Hong Kong at 7.30-9.am is really and earily deserted. Its hard to even find an open coffee shop.
After 10.30(?) walk up the escalator and stop off at shops on way then get taxi back down into town to save 71 yr lgs

Lunch at floating restaurant in Aberdeen?

Just great to get out of airport and get fresh ( ish) air
good luck

Mal's suggestions are right on track. Don't be scared to use Taxis for the short trips from Airport Express station to Peak Tram etc if not up to walking. HK Taxis have a flag-fall of HK$18 (about A$3) for first 2km or I think 4 mins. So its not a big investment. At busy times there can be a bit of a wait for Taxis at the station. I had to wait about 40 mins at 7pm one night. But most times its pretty much a walk-up process.

There are also several free shuttle buses for Airport Express passengers that travel various loops around the local area. These are available at both Kowloon and HK stations.

The Airport Express is HK$100 one-way or HK$150 same-day return.

After collecting your bags, and just as you exit the arrivals area into the main airport terminal, there are some very helpful tourist information people. Take a few mins to stop by and chat with them. They all speak very good english and will give you a map and highlight a recommended route for the day. They have people asking just the same thing every day so have some good ideas and will write down the bus numbers, highlight the route on the map, tell you how much things cost, what times they operate etc. Definitely worth stopping by and asking their recommendations, even if you have to wait until they have finished with the person in front. They have brochures for all the regular things you may want to visit. They will even give you a card with the names of common places written in English and Chinese so you can show a taxi driver if they don't understand your pronunciation or accent.

With taxis, the best way to first tell the driver the area (like suburb) you want t go to, and then the name of the place. For example, for the peak tram, say "Central, Peak Tram station" or "Causeway Bay, Star Ferry" and they will know what you mean. The areas will be marked on the map.

If the weather is clear, definitely head up to the peak (tram up) and consider taking the bus back down. The bus takes longer but gives you a good view of the residential areas and wonder views as you wind your way down the mountainside roads.

Since you gave just purchased a new camera, stay away from Mong kok or you might find the same camera for less.

Try eating at a local noodle restaurant. A great feed can be had (by pointing to the picture you like, or some have English menus if you ask) for around HK$50 including a beer (likely Tsing Tao).

It's HKD100 for same day return!

MTR

Your octopus card will be charged HKD100 on first journey - nothing on the return (if same day).

When I was last in HKG I found the prices to be the same or more expensive... I guess a big case of YMMV?

All great suggestions but you might want to consider taking a double decker bus from the Star Ferry Kowloon side and go to Stanley Markets...Sit in the very front seats upstairs for a fabulous view of HK and then good food and shopping ( even though a bit touristy ) in Stanley...A great trip to do with you Dad..Enjoy:-|

Stanley market is a nice trip (you even pass a golf course) but methinks you catch the Bus from the exchange Square bus station at Central (on the Island).

Bus #'s 6 6A 6X and 260 (cost and journey times vary)

Serfty was that gold course or golf course ???...prefer the former and hoping there is a rich lode to be had !!!...When we did the bus trip to Stanley there was a bus from Star Ferry Kowloon but it might just be that you are more accurate than me Serfty !!!

Supposed to be Golf course, but it takes real GOLD to play that one. :p

Actually, there is such a bus, the 973 from Tsim Sha Tsui - however there are more options from Exchange Square on the island itself.

Hmmm, I was sure the sign at the airport said HK$150 for same day return. Wonder if its different for Octopus cards?

Nup, you can purchase same day returns sans Octopus - check the 'MTR' link ...

Some very interesting ideas for a day in Hong Kong; hopefully I can find the thread in November when I need it.

I thought QF009 and Samh0004 would have had some ideas for what to do in Hong Kong.

Will check out the signage at the station next week. A same-day return is on the cards for us depending on who and where we meet up with for dinner.

I've done a very similar transit in HKG flying FCO-HKG-PER. If I did it again I would try to get somewhere to sleep in the morning, because our tiredness really detracted from the whole day.

yep, Stanley Markets is also a good place to visit (although, yes touristy). Busses can be caught from under Central Station [I think that's Exchange square?]. Return journey is around an hour, and it's a pleasant seaside spot.

I can confrim it is HKD100 for a same day return.

If you have $ to spare you can take a helicopter to macau - 15 mins each way and leaves every 30 mins. HKD2300 all inclusive pp each way.

Otherwise I agree with selecting two or three things from the list below (includes advice from other posters):

- bus to Stanley Market (leaves from near Airport Express terminus on Hong Kong island)
- tram to peak
- star ferry across to TST
- buffet lunch at YMCA hotel (very good value and good cafeteria style food)
- walk up and down nathan road for shopping
- Nong Ping 360 (spectacular views of Airport on the way!!) - very quick (5 mins) to get to airport by bus from NP360
- perhaps splurge with high tea at peninsula in TST?
