Lounge access limbo

As part of our Chrimbo/NY trip to Honkers and Seoul, the other half and I have booked a QF whY fare to HKG and ICN. Unfortunately this trip was decided on a whim and between now and then we've got a couple of trips confirmed, so we're going whY to save some dosh.

We're right with lounge access going out, as we're on QF29 to HKG followed by a CX flight to Seoul.

Coming back, we found that going on the QF codeshare operated by OZ via SYD would shave a significant amount of traveling time and money. Plus after an OZ flight, albeit in C, recently I've found them to be a rather decent airline. But it'd seem that going on the rules, we officially would not get ANY lounge access!

I'd have both oneworld emerald (AA and QF) and *G (BD) during this trip. Lounge access based on status requires us to be traveling on flights that are both operated AND marketed by members of one particular alliance, and thus QF368 (oneworld) operated by OZ (*A) would not fulfill this requirement.

Our other options are:
1) For approx USD100 extra we can do ICN-HKG-MEL on CX/QF (with an overnight in HKG as QF30 leaves too early) or ICN-HKG-SYD-MEL on CX/QF/QF (more SCs despite extra traveling time - alas the other half doesn't see it that way )

2) Less desirable: get a CX fare and do MEL-HKG-ICN return, as doing so would ensure lounge access the whole way through. But that'd involve spending a lot of time on CX (let's not go there... those following my FB updates would know just how bad my recent experiences with them are) and we do try to be on QF as much as possible. The fare difference is negligible.

Can anyone see a way around our dillemma? Should I pray for a heavily hung over OZ lounge agent who wouldn't notice the "Sold as QF368" fine print on our BPs? Would the OZ lounge agent relent if I do the DYKWIA thing of presenting all 3 FF cards on the desk, maybe get down on my knees and beg? :p Or should I just suck it up and go for one of the other options? We'd v much like to have a shower prior to long hauls in whY. :)

TIA for any insight. :)

Your issue is the ICN airport coming back right ?
Stay as long outside as you wish, and simply relax in one of the cafes, they have free wireless even !
Then inside... shopping !!! and i know you can shop ;)
Of course you can always try the lounge, you never know your luck.

ICN is a pretty nice airport, i did a 4 or 5 hours there positioning for a DONE3

Yes to clarify, the issue is ex-ICN coming back to MEL. Our itinerary as it stands is MEL-HKG-ICN-xSYD-MEL.

Ah yes, we did see some v nice shops at ICN the other day. A pity most of them weren't open as we departed at some stupidly early time. Enough to rival the boutiques we saw in Myeong Dong and Apu Jung. :) The other half, however, isn't such a big fan of shopping though he doesn't mind the occasional gift in exchange for all those hours he spends waiting for me.

I just remembered - I get Priority Pass due to AMEX. With PP - can you really get into any lounge regardless of COS and airline? I've read the fine print several times and it seems this is the way to go! I note that both OZ lounges are listed on the PP site. I suppose paying USD27 for the other half to get in is better than no lounge access altogether, and a fair bit cheaper than USD100.

Should work, the 2nd person PP entry is a good backup bet if you do not fill enough time doing something else or really want to lounge.

And what i found interesting is when i saw the shops they were cheap as well (lots of sales) not sure if its still the case a Korean girlfriend of mine said the other day that her shoes/bags whatever would only be about 5-10% cheaper so not a lot compared to other places maybe now.

Yeah they had a fair bit of sales going on since the changeover of seasons is happening; it's the same wherever in the world you are this time of the year. But I generally don't shop much in airports unless I'm really bored as the pricing is not too different from high street pricing, as you get GST refunds as a tourist. Finally the merchandise at airport boutiques are rather limited compared to the flagship stores outside. The most competitive prices I've seen on my trip were actually in London, as the GBP was still rather low and Harvey Nics' had a massive sale - 50% discounts, even on new stock! OTOH, they're all still better than the rip off pricings in Melbourne.

But I digress...

Well at least I have PP as a back up in case they won't let me in on OW/*A status. :)

I would not spend any money to use the OZ C lounge. It is really junk. Plastic everything and pot noddles in foam cups. The 'sparkling' is a Zinfandel from a no name winery (seriously) in California.

The lounge looks great, comfortable seats and has a decent view. The toilets are clean (everything in Seoul is clean) but used cups and plates liter the lounge. It also has no newspapers! Just promo magazines. Apparently it came 3rd in the Business Traveler lounge list in Asia. Don't know what they were smoking. NRT JAL J lounge is streets ahead!

You should have OZ access via your *G card. You'll have a OZ boarding pass so I wouldn't be concerned.

I assume you are staying at the W - Great move. It is awesome. The free shuttle bus to the subway station is really easy and at the second bus stop there are plenty of interesting places to eat. Skip the hotel restaurant it's pricey and serves western food.

This trip will be my 2nd visit as we both had such a fantastic time in Seoul a week ago. :) I agree - the W is fantastic, except some minor niggles which I'd cover in the TR. We didn't touch Kitchen at all. WooBar was fab tho!

Save the US$100 and spend it at a decent bar/restaurant at or near the airport. While lounge access is nice when its available, there are plenty of people who survive the airport experience without using a lounge.

Really? Who do you know that had survived an airport experience without loung access? I don't think it could have been anyone from AFF....

I've been known to survive from time to time without lounge access (kinda like slumming it , it's fun for the novelty of it, but I wouldn't like to do without it for every flight)

That said, I would not be paying US$100 for a couple of hours, for that sort of money you'd probably be able to get a room at an airport hotel and order some room service, you'd have privacy, a shower and food \ drink all thrown into one.

In the last few months I can include my wife (flew DJ to SYD and back) and son (non-status in Y on QF to PER and back) and my daughter will likely survive a similar experience flying to CBR in a few weeks. And I remember doing it myself once or twice .

Mrs Rb & I are considered by many mates to be well travelled & have at times enjoyed J & Y+ but many trips have survived without lounge access. I am not sure I can think of many lounge experiences that I would value at $US100. Sure I have loved the shower at refuel times & pre-flight drinkies but certainly nil access is not the end of the world. Sitting at the front Y when in Y has never been absolutely essential to us either!

If you've missed a post further up about PP-based, then it's USD27 for the lounge access now not USD100. The fee is for the other half to get in.

Nil access isn't the end of the world but rubbing shoulders with the great unwashed and gate lice might just be!;)

That said I'd do what any other respectable FFer does and wave the relevant FF cards in front of the lounge dragon to try to gain access via status (read: FOC) initially.

Holds Hand up ...

In the last year or so I can recall departing SEA, TPA and ONT ... :P

Of course, I recall from several of your TR's that you often miss the Wing breakfast.:p (I like to use the BNE/SYD red eyes from HKG for several reasons, no need for an early being one)

For me in the last 12-18mths its been BLR, GOI, BOM (dom), MNL, various domestic destinations in China & Philippines, KUL, YUL. Mainly the sort of places a lounge would be useful (at least moreso than ICN, HKG etc).

I have not had lounge access many times and to be honest does not make that much difference. In fact there has been a number of times where I have had lounge access and got sick of sitting around in the lounge and went out in the terminal to get a drink so I can see real people.

Lounges can get extremely boring.

I actually find the boredom in the lounges quite peaceful and relaxing after a fairly hectic week of travelling. Often at HKG a coupe of hours in the lounge is more pleasant than shopping and burning lots of cash that has other priorities...
