I'm surprised to see GPS devices in the OK list! What the hell???!
Why are you surprised? Its a receiver, not a transmitter. The GPS radio signals from the satellites are there whether there is a receiver present or not. And the signal strength is so low that any subsequent RF emissions from the device will be minuscule.

Besides the pilot needs to know where he/she is ;)

As serfty posted, cameras are allowed on at all times. I guess some may get narky if you have a very elaborate contraption (they don't seem to give a toss for the run-of-the-mill compact camera); some will get even more narky if you have an iPhone or other "smart phone" like device, even if you have it in "flight mode" and on only for the purposes of taking a photo.

They are phones, not cameras. The fact that they contain they contain a seconadary ability to take photographs does not make them a camera.

Interesting - how about cameras with MP3 playback / GPS / WiFi? I guess you could say that they are 'primarily' cameras, but the internal electroncs wouldn't be too dissimilar.

Or how about an iPod Touch with a camera (I know such a device does not yet exist, but it may in a couple of months)? No phone, but another convergent multifunction device.

Nice.

Looking forward to using GPS on my next BNE-MEL!

Sadly, battery life is only about 60mins so will have to be selective as to when, maybe on and off for "trip updates".

I asked about camera usage on SQ the other day, they said no. But I'll try again on the way back...

What absolute tosh! One of teh prmary reasons I am getting mrssimongr is that it is a camera and a video camera so she can quickly takes pics of babygr and send them to me - the camera is of primary importance.

The issue is about radio waves impacting on aircraft systems - not how you badge a device.

Most are, but some are cameras with phones attached, ala some Sony-Ericsson camera-phones. Also you could claim an iPhone is more an iPod than it is a phone, or even possibly a portable gaming device :p

If you're serious about quality photos you don't buy a camera made by a phone company, despite what the phone manufacturer tells you.

You can't beat a proper lens and proper resolution sensors to record the image.

Goodness. That's radical thinking for you :!:

You know I think the iPhone 3MP camera is probably slightly better than the 2MP digital camera that my parents had until recently...

if people are serious about photography then I would suggest not taking pictures as a jet aircraft rumbles across bumpy tarmac shaking every rivet...

That's what image stabiliser control is for :p

I have used my GARMIN in a plane before - you must be next to the window and it takes ages for the GPS to locate satellites!!

On the up note - when I hit my STATS on the GARMIN, a top speed of 795km/p/h is pretty groovy! (its also hard to convince friends my XR8 does 795k's :) )

I also downloaded the lear jet icon, once connected, I zoomed in as close as I could get to ground level on the GPS with the Lear zooming along - quite cool

Mr!

:)
